NEWCASTLE, Australia (Interstat) — The Newcastle Jets opened their A-League season with a dominant 5-2 victory over Melbourne Victory on Friday at McDonald Jones Stadium. The match defied a pregame projection of a 1-1 draw from Interstat, as the Jets’ offense overwhelmed the visitors. Alex Badolato led the onslaught with a hat trick, scoring in the 20th, 45+2 and 79th minutes. Ben Gibson, Keegan Jelacic and Oscar Fryer also scored for Newcastle. Jason Davidson of Melbourne Victory received a yellow card in the 35th minute. Both teams opened their league campaigns with the lopsided result.
