Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory
NEWCASTLE, Australia (Interstat) — In a stunning opening-night display, the Newcastle Jets dismantled Melbourne Victory 5-2 in an A-League match on Friday, defying pregame projections with an offensive explosion at McDonald Jones Stadium.
The contest, which was expected to be a tightly contested affair according to statistical models, was effectively decided by halftime as the Jets built a commanding lead. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring 1-1 draw, while its ELO rating system gave the home side only a slight 54 percent probability of victory. The Jets rendered those forecasts irrelevant with a relentless first-half performance.
Newcastle set the tone early, with forward Ben Gibson opening the scoring in the 14th minute. The early advantage was short-lived, however, as Melbourne’s Alex Badolato responded with an equalizer just six minutes later in the 20th minute.
The Jets quickly reasserted control, with Denis Genreau finding the net in the 25th minute to put Newcastle back in front 2-1. The first half concluded with a crushing blow to the visitors, as Badolato struck again for Melbourne in the second minute of stoppage time. His goal sent the teams into the break with the Jets leading 3-1, having seized all momentum.
Any hopes of a Melbourne comeback were extinguished early in the second half. Substitute Keegan Jelacic extended Newcastle’s lead to 4-1 with a goal in the 55th minute, capitalizing on his fresh legs against a beleaguered Victory defense.
Badolato completed his hat trick for Melbourne in the 79th minute, providing a lone bright spot for the visiting side and pulling the score to 4-2. Despite the consolation goal, Newcastle had the final say, with forward Oscar Fryer adding a fifth for the Jets in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to seal the emphatic 5-2 victory.
The match’s only disciplinary action was a yellow card issued to Melbourne Victory’s Jason Davidson in the 35th minute.
The result marks the first match of the A-League season for both clubs. With the win, Newcastle Jets begin their campaign with a record of 0 wins and 0 losses in the competition, while Melbourne Victory starts at 0 wins and 0 losses. Their records across all competitions also stand at 0 wins and 0 losses. The lopsided scoreline immediately gives Newcastle a significant boost in goal difference as the new season gets underway.
