Derry City Upsets Shamrock Rovers in League Opener

DERRY, Northern Ireland (Interstat) — Derry City opened its Premier Division season with a 2-1 upset victory over Shamrock Rovers on Sunday at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. The home side defied pregame projections that heavily favored the visitors.

Brandon Fleming put Derry City ahead in the 25th minute. Sadou Diallo appeared to seal the win with an 87th-minute goal, but Shamrock Rovers’ Rory Gaffney scored deep in stoppage time to create a tense finish. The visitors played a man down after Lee Grace received a red card in the 62nd minute. Diallo finished with a goal and an assist for Derry City.
