Ukraine Tops Iceland in World Cup Qualifier, Defying Pre-Game Projections

WARSAW, Poland (Interstat) — Ukraine opened its World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Iceland on Sunday, outperforming statistical forecasts. Playing at Stadion Miejski Legii Warszawa, the hosts broke a scoreless deadlock in the 83rd minute on a goal from forward Oleksandr Zubkov. Midfielder Oleksii Hutsuliak sealed the win with a goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. Yukhym Konoplia and Ruslan Malinovskyi each recorded an assist for Ukraine. Iceland substitute Ísak Jóhannesson received a yellow card just before halftime. The result defied a pre-game projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 1-1 draw.
