Preview: Midtjylland W vs. KRC Gent in Europa League Group Stage

HERNING, Denmark (Interstat) — A pivotal Europa League group stage match unfolds Thursday as Midtjylland W hosts Belgium’s KRC Gent at MCH Arena.

The Group G clash pits a Danish side seeking consistency against a Belgian squad riding a wave of momentum. The match kicks off at 6:45 p.m. local time (1745 GMT).

Midtjylland W (2-1-2, 7 points) enters after a wild 3-3 draw with domestic rival Viborg on Sunday. Their European form has been uneven, following a November home loss to AS Roma with a commanding 3-0 win over Celtic earlier that month. Their home prowess in Europe this season is notable, however, with a combined 7-0 scoreline in victories over Celtic and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

KRC Gent (3-1-1, 10 points) sits atop the group and can secure advancement with a positive result. Gent arrives with confidence after a crucial 2-1 comeback victory over Basel on Nov. 27. That win extended their unbeaten run in the competition to four matches (3-0-1), a streak featuring a dramatic 4-3 road win at Braga and a scoreless draw with Real Betis.

Gent’s attack has been potent in Europe, netting multiple goals in four of five matches. Midtjylland’s defense, which conceded three times last weekend, will face a stern test.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Midtjylland W is projected to win 3-1. History offers no guide, as this is the first meeting between the clubs.

The fixture concludes the group stage for both sides. Gent currently leads the group, with Midtjylland in third. A win for the hosts would bolster their knockout round hopes, while Gent aims to clinch first place.

Following this match, both teams resume Europa League play in the knockout round playoffs on Jan. 22. Gent will travel to face FC Utrecht, while Midtjylland W is set to visit SK Brann of Norway.
