BASEL, Switzerland (Interstat) — Basel opened its Europa League campaign with a 3-1 victory over FCSB on Thursday at St. Jakob-Park. The match was upended in the 12th minute when FCSB goalkeeper Ștefan Târnovanu was sent off with a red card. Substitute Darius Olaru put the 10-man visitors ahead in the 57th minute, but Basel responded forcefully. Xherdan Shaqiri equalized in the 73rd and netted the winner in the 88th, with Ibrahim Salah adding a third goal moments later. The result defied a pregame projection from Interstat that had forecast a 1-1 draw.
