Wealdstone vs Morecambe
RUISLIP, England (Interstat) — Substitute Jack Nolan scored twice in a 13-minute second-half span to complete a dramatic comeback as Morecambe stunned Wealdstone 3-2 in a National League match on Tuesday afternoon at Grosvenor Vale.
The victory, only Morecambe’s sixth in 35 league matches this season, defied overwhelming pregame projections. Statistical analysts gave the home side a 76 percent probability of victory, with a predicted final score of 2-1 in Wealdstone’s favor. Instead, Morecambe rallied from an early deficit to secure a rare three points on the road.
The match began in chaotic fashion, with Wealdstone’s Lewis Payne receiving a yellow card in just the second minute. A minute later, the home side struck first. Forward Olufela Olomola found the net in the third minute, giving Wealdstone an immediate 1-0 lead.
The first half continued to be punctuated by disciplinary issues, with four more yellow cards shown before the break. Morecambe’s Gwion Edwards was booked in the 11th minute, followed by a quick succession of cautions for Morecambe’s Harlee Dean in the 32nd minute and Wealdstone’s Dominic Hutchinson in the 33rd.
Morecambe found its equalizer in the 34th minute through another substitute, Christopher Popov. The momentum shifted decisively just before halftime when Nolan, who had entered the match off the bench, scored his first goal in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the interval.
Nolan doubled his tally and extended Morecambe’s advantage in the 58th minute, making it 3-1 and completing his decisive brace. The goals were assisted by Kyle Jameson and Dylan Kadji, respectively, both of whom were also substituted into the contest.
Wealdstone refused to capitulate and pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute through forward Micah Obiero, assisted by Hutchinson, setting up a tense finale. The home side’s hopes of a second equalizer were severely damaged when Payne received his second yellow card of the match in the 85th minute, resulting in a red card and forcing Wealdstone to play the final minutes with 10 men. Morecambe managed the game from there to see out the victory.
The result provides a vital boost for Morecambe, which now holds a league record of 6-20-9. The club had won just once in its previous eight matches across all competitions, a 4-0 victory over Eastleigh on Feb. 21, and was coming off a 1-0 home loss to York City this past Saturday. Wealdstone, which falls to 10-12-9 in the league, saw a two-match unbeaten run snapped after a 2-1 win over Brackley Town on Feb. 24.
Morecambe will look to build on the upset when it travels to face Sutton United next Saturday. Wealdstone aims to rebound with a trip to Braintree Town, also on Saturday.
