SAO PAULO (Interstat) — Sao Paulo and Flamengo played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday in a Campeonato Carioca Série A match at Estádio Urbano Caldeira. The result defied pregame projections that heavily favored Flamengo.

Sao Paulo’s Luciano opened the scoring in the third minute and later assisted on a goal by Ferreira in the 80th. Flamengo’s equalizers came from substitutes Samuel Lino in the 64th and Giorgian De Arrascaeta. The match was contentious, featuring five yellow cards and a red card shown to Flamengo’s Gonzalo Plata in the 67th minute. Both teams remain unbeaten with a draw to start their seasons across all competitions.
