Northampton Town vs Barnsley

NORTHAMPTON, England (Interstat) — Two clubs sliding in opposite directions but stuck in a shared rut meet Tuesday as Northampton Town hosts Barnsley in a League One clash at Sixfields Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. local time.

Northampton enters on a five-match losing streak, capped by a humbling 5-1 defeat at Cardiff City on April 25. The Cobblers have dropped seven of their last eight league outings, a stretch that has seen them concede 17 goals while scoring just four. Their last victory came Feb. 3 — a 2-2 draw that felt like a win, but it remains their only point from the last 15 available.

Barnsley arrives in similarly poor form. The Tykes have managed one win in their last 10 matches: a 3-1 victory over Rotherham United on April 11. Since then, they have gone four games without a win (0-2-2), including a 2-1 loss at Luton Town on Saturday. That defeat left Barnsley stuck in mid-table, with little momentum to carry into the final week of the regular season.

The teams drew 2-2 in their most recent meeting Feb. 3 in Barnsley. Interstat’s game simulator projects another deadlock: Northampton Town 1, Barnsley 1.

For Barnsley, scoring has been a persistent issue. The Tykes have been shut out in three of their last four matches, and their attack has produced multiple goals only once in the last six games.

Northampton’s defending has been equally porous. The Cobblers have allowed three or more goals in each of their last three fixtures, a trend that must be reversed if they hope to end their slide.

Both sides close the season Saturday: Barnsley hosts Stockport County; Northampton welcomes Plymouth Argyle.
