Millwall vs Blackburn Rovers FC
LONDON (Interstat) — Substitute Mathias Jørgensen scored twice in the final 10 minutes to complete a dramatic comeback for Blackburn Rovers FC in a 2-1 victory over Millwall in the Championship on Saturday at The Den.
The result, which flipped the script on both the pregame projections and the flow of the match, handed Millwall a rare home defeat and continued Blackburn’s recent dominance in the fixture.
The home side, which entered the match with one of the division’s best records and was projected by Interstat’s ELO system with an 88.90 percent probability to win, controlled proceedings for long stretches. The breakthrough finally came in the 54th minute when midfielder Luke Cundle found the net to give Millwall a deserved lead.
The match tilted further in Millwall’s favor just five minutes later when defender Zak Sturge was shown a straight red card, forcing Blackburn to play the final half-hour a man down. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors grew into the game.
The pivotal shift came with the introduction of Jørgensen. The substitute announced his arrival in the 80th minute, scoring an equalizer to stun the home crowd. He completed the turnaround just five minutes later, netting the winner in the 85th minute to secure a vital three points for his team.
Millwall’s frustration was compounded in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time when Tom Atcheson received a yellow card.
The victory marked Blackburn’s second consecutive win over Millwall this season, following a 2-0 result at Ewood Park on Dec. 20. It provided a significant boost for a Blackburn side that had won only one of its previous five league matches. For Millwall, the defeat was a setback in its pursuit of a high finish in the table, snapping a run of strong home form.
Blackburn, which improved its league record to 10 wins, 17 losses and 8 draws, next hosts Middlesbrough on March 21. Millwall, now 20 wins, 10 losses and 6 draws in the Championship, will look to rebound on the same day with a trip to face Ipswich Town FC.
