Crawley Town vs Oldham Athletic
CRAWLEY, England (Interstat) — Substitute Jack Stevens provided a late spark for Oldham Athletic, but it was not enough for victory as the visiting Latics were held to a 2-2 draw by Crawley Town in a frenetic League Two match at Broadfield Stadium on Saturday.
The result did little to improve the mid-table standing of either side in England’s fourth tier. Oldham Athletic, which entered the contest on a two-game losing skid, showed resilience to twice come from behind and secure a point on the road. The draw extends Oldham’s winless run to three matches across all competitions.
Crawley Town, seeking to rebound from a 3-1 defeat to Bromley just four days prior, started brightly and was rewarded in the 18th minute. Forward Ryan Loft found the net to give the home side an early advantage, converting an assist from midfielder Josh Flint.
The hosts carried that lead into halftime, but Oldham manager Micky Mellon’s decision to introduce Michael Mellon as a substitute at the break paid immediate dividends. Just five minutes into the second half, the younger Mellon leveled the score at 1-1 with a well-taken finish.
The game turned again in the 68th minute. Just moments after Oldham’s Jake Leake was shown a yellow card, Crawley retook the lead. The goal came from another substitute, as Jack Stevens marked his entry into the match by putting the Reds back in front, 2-1. The assist came from fellow substitute Joe Garner.
Stevens, however, would transition from hero to culprit for the home side. After receiving a yellow card in the third minute of stoppage time, he was involved in the play that led to Oldham’s equalizer. In the 82nd minute, Stevens turned provider, setting up Oldham forward Kabongo Tshimanga for the decisive final goal. Tshimanga’s strike ensured the points would be shared.
The frantic conclusion was marred by a flurry of late disciplinary actions. Following Stevens’ booking, Oldham’s Joe Garner was shown a yellow card in the fifth minute of added time, and Crawley’s Josh Flint received one in the sixth minute, capping a physical and tense finish.
The 2-2 outcome defied the pre-match projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 1-1 draw but whose ELO rating system gave Crawley Town a 53 percent probability of securing a victory.
With the draw, Oldham Athletic’s record in League Two this season moves to 5 wins, 6 losses and 10 draws. Their overall record across all competitions is now 5-9-10. Crawley Town’s League Two record stands at 4 wins, 10 losses and 8 draws, with an overall mark of 5-12-8.
Both teams will look to turn draws into wins in their next League Two fixtures. Oldham Athletic returns to Boundary Park to host Tranmere Rovers on Dec. 20. Crawley Town will travel to face Swindon Town on the same date.
