Portsmouth Edges Charlton Athletic in Dramatic Championship Finish
PORTSMOUTH, England (Dec. 29, 2025) (Interstat) — Portsmouth opened its Championship campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic on Monday at Fratton Park after two stoppage-time goals decided the match.
Conor Shaughnessy broke a scoreless deadlock for the hosts in the 69th minute. Charlton substitute Harvey Knibbs leveled the match deep into added time with a 96th-minute goal. Portsmouth responded immediately, however, as midfielder Yang Minhyeok netted the winner just two minutes later in the 98th minute to secure the three points.
The frantic finish defied a pre-match projection from Interstat, which gave Portsmouth an 80.7% probability to win but simulated a 1-1 draw. The result leaves Portsmouth with a perfect start to its league season, while Charlton begins with a loss.
