Portsmouth vs Charlton Athletic

PORTSMOUTH, England (Interstat) — Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic meet for the second time this month on Monday, looking to break a deadlock in a Championship fixture that could hinge on which struggling attack finds its finishing touch.

The match at Fratton Park kicks off at 3 p.m. local time on Dec. 29, the final league fixture of 2025 for both sides. The teams played to a scoreless draw at Charlton’s Valley stadium just 23 days earlier on Dec. 6.

Recent form offers little separation. Portsmouth (W-D-L) enters off a 1-1 home draw with Queens Park Rangers on Friday. Their last five matches show one win, two draws and two losses. Charlton arrives following a 1-0 road loss to Norwich City on Friday, extending a run of just one victory in their last five outings.

Defensive resolve has been a rare positive. Portsmouth has conceded only four goals in its last four matches. Charlton’s defense held firm in the prior meeting and in a 1-0 win over Oxford United on Dec. 20, but has been prone to heavy defeats this season, including 5-1 and 3-0 losses to Southampton and Stoke City, respectively.

The greater concern for both is scoring. Portsmouth has been shut out in four of its last eight league games. Charlton has failed to score in three of its last five. Interstat’s game simulator projects another low-scoring affair, predicting a 1-1 draw.

“We know it will be tight,” said Portsmouth manager John Mousinho. “We create chances, but the final ball and the finish have let us down recently. We need to be more clinical, especially at home.”

Charlton boss Nathan Jones acknowledged the challenge. “Portsmouth are organized and make it difficult. We had our moments in the first game but lacked quality in the final third. We have to be braver and more precise.”

The result could provide a crucial momentum shift heading into the New Year’s fixture crunch. Portsmouth visits Bristol City on Jan. 1, while Charlton hosts Coventry City the same day.

Injury reports for both sides remain unchanged from Friday, with each expected to field similar starting XIs. Portsmouth will lean on the home support at a sold-out Fratton Park, where they are unbeaten in three, while Charlton seeks its first away win since early November.

Monday’s referee is James Linington.
