Angola vs Egypt
ANGOLA, Egypt Set for AFCON World Cup Qualifying Clash
LUANDA, Angola (Interstat) — A crucial Africa Cup of Nations World Cup qualifying match sees Angola host Egypt on Monday, with the Pharaohs aiming to maintain perfect form against a Palancas Negras side seeking a statement victory.
The Group D fixture, scheduled for Dec. 29, 2025, at Estádio 11 de Novembro, pits an Egyptian squad riding a wave of momentum against an Angolan team hungry to rebound at home.
Egypt arrives atop the group standings following a 1-0 home victory over South Africa this past Friday. That result extended a winning streak that began with a 2-1 comeback win against Zimbabwe on Dec. 22. The Pharaohs’ attack, led by captain Mohamed Salah, has shown efficiency, while a defense anchored by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy has conceded just once in two matches.
“We are in a good moment, but we respect Angola,“ Egypt manager Rui Vitória said. “Every match in qualification is a final. We must be focused.“
Angola’s path has been more turbulent. They needed a late equalizer to salvage a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe on Friday, a result that followed a narrow 2-1 away defeat to South Africa on Dec. 22. The single point leaves pressure on manager Pedro Gonçalves to secure a positive result in front of the home supporters.
“Our spirit is strong. We learn from every match,“ Gonçalves said. “Facing Egypt is a great challenge, but we are prepared to fight for our people.“
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Egypt is a heavy favorite, projected to win 3-0. The model cites Egypt’s superior defensive record and offensive firepower as key factors.
Historically, Egypt holds a significant advantage, including a 2-0 victory in the teams’ last meeting during the 2023 AFCON group stage.
Monday’s match kicks off at 6 p.m. local time (1700 GMT). A win for Egypt would solidify their control of the group, while Angola desperately needs points to keep their qualification hopes alive.
