Telfs vs Austria Salzburg

FOUGÈRES, France (Interstat) — Marco Hödl scored three goals in a 17-minute second-half span to power Austria Salzburg to a 4-2 victory over Telfs in an AUT: Cup of Cup match Saturday at Stade Charles Berthelot.

The visiting side, Austria Salzburg, overturned pregame projections and a one-goal halftime deficit to secure its first win in the domestic cup competition this season. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Telfs 2, Austria Salzburg 1, with its ELO system giving Telfs a 68.4 percent probability to win.

The match, played on a neutral field in Fougères, France, saw a tense and physical opening half. Telfs defender Philipp Viertler received the game’s first yellow card in the 48th minute, a harbinger of a contentious period to come.

The deadlock was broken shortly after. Austria Salzburg attacker Marco Hödl, standing 5-foot-9, opened his account in the 54th minute, leveling the match. He struck again just three minutes later in the 57th minute, giving his team a lead it would not relinquish.

The match then erupted with four goals in a frantic 13-minute sequence. Austria Salzburg substitute Alexander Schwaighofer, who entered the game in the 57th minute, extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 67th minute. Hödl completed his hat trick in the 71st minute, sealing his performance as the game’s top star before being substituted two minutes later.

Telfs mounted a late response. Midfielder Andre Pellegrini, who played the full 90 minutes, pulled a goal back in the 76th minute. Attacker Julius Perstaller, a native of Innsbruck, Austria, then made it 4-2 in the 80th minute. Perstaller, however, had been shown a yellow card 10 minutes earlier for Telfs.

The second half was marred by disciplinary issues, with three yellow cards issued between the 58th and 70th minutes. Austria Salzburg’s Matthias Theiner and Florian Wiedl were booked in quick succession, followed by Telfs’ Perstaller.

The result improves Austria Salzburg’s record in the Cup of Cup to 1-2 this season, while Telfs falls to 0-1. In overall competition across all tournaments, Austria Salzburg now stands at 6-9-4. Telfs’ overall record moved to 2-1-2.

Austria Salzburg entered the match following a series of mixed results, including a scoreless draw with First Vienna on Dec. 13 and a 1-0 win over Aust Klagenfurt on Dec. 7. The team’s recent form had been inconsistent, with the victory offering a positive departure.

Telfs, having played fewer matches this season, came in off two comprehensive victories in regional competition in August, a 3-1 win over Haiming and a 5-0 rout of Hatting Pettnau.

Austria Salzburg will look to build on the cup victory when it returns to AUT: 2. Liga action Feb. 28 against Floridsdorfer. The team faces a string of league fixtures through May, including matches against Amstetten, Saint Polten and a road test at Sturm Graz on May 2.
