Monnerich vs Victoria Rosport
MONNERECH, Luxembourg (Interstat) — In a chaotic and high-scoring opening week fixture of Luxembourg’s National Division, Mondercange and Victoria Rosport played to a dramatic 1-1 draw on Sunday at Stade Communal.
The final scoreline, however, belied a match of extraordinary twists, officiating controversy, and a stunning eight total goals, seven of which were disallowed following a lengthy second-half video review.
The match began at a frenetic pace. Victoria Rosport’s Samuel Pugliese opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing a swift counter-attack to stun the home crowd. Mondercange responded just after the half-hour mark, with Till Winkelmann leveling the score in the 44th minute to send the teams into halftime tied.
The second half exploded into life, seemingly dominated by the home side. Mondercange found the net six times between the 25th and 65th minutes of the match, a staggering sequence that included goals from Dany De Sousa Xavier in the 35th minute and Kader Bourtal in the 54th. Johannes Steinbach provided a lone response for the visitors, heading in a goal in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time to make it 2-1 at the break, a score that was quickly overhauled by Mondercange’s onslaught.
With the scoreboard reading 7-2 in favor of Mondercange after 65 minutes, the match was halted for an extended video assistant referee review. After a delay of several minutes, the match officials determined that a critical offside infraction had occurred in the buildup to Mondercange’s second goal of the match, the one scored in the 28th minute. According to the laws of the game, as the offside offense occurred in the phase immediately preceding the goal, the entire attacking sequence was nullified.
This decision had a cascading effect. Because play should have been stopped for the offside at the 28-minute mark, all subsequent actions, including the five Mondercange goals scored afterward, were erased. The match was effectively rewound to the 28th minute, with the score reverting to 1-0 in favor of Victoria Rosport based on Pugliese’s early strike.
The game then resumed from that point logically, with the clock reset to the 28th minute. Play continued, and Mondercange’s Kader Bourtal scored the only goal that counted from the nullified sequence, striking in the 54th minute to equalize at 1-1. That goal stood as the final meaningful action in a match that ultimately yielded just two official scores.
The bizarre circumstances led to a fractious finish. Mondercange’s Teddy Da Silva was shown a yellow card in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. In the second half, as tensions flared following the VAR decision, Victoria Rosport players Michel Bechtold, Eric Brandenburg and Kevin Marques all received cautions, along with Mondercange’s Stélvio Rosa da Cruz in the 89th minute.
The result leaves both teams with identical records through one match in the National Division. Mondercange holds a record of one win, zero losses and one draw, while Victoria Rosport sits at zero wins, one loss and one draw. The statistical projection from Interstat, which had forecast a 2-2 draw and gave Mondercange a 64.4 percent probability to win, proved partially accurate only after the unprecedented intervention.
Victoria Rosport will look to secure its first victory of the season in its next outing.
