Surrey 89ers vs. Cheshire

CHESHIRE, England (Interstat) — The Cheshire Phoenix host the Surrey 89ers on Sunday, May 3, at Cheshire Oaks Arena in a Super League Basketball matchup that pits a playoff contender against a team fighting to climb out of the league’s basement.

Cheshire (21-12) has dominated the season series, winning all five meetings this year, including a 128-96 victory Friday on Surrey’s home floor. The Phoenix have won four of their last five games overall and sit comfortably among the league’s top teams. Surrey (13-18) has lost four of its last five, with the lone bright spot a 89-79 road win at Bristol Academy on April 19.

Guard Kino Lilly has been the engine for Surrey’s offense, averaging 24.3 points over his last six games. In Friday’s loss to Cheshire, Lilly logged 40 minutes and posted 33 points, four rebounds and eight assists. He followed that with 14 points, three rebounds and six assists in a 86-62 defeat to London on April 25.

For Cheshire, point guard LaQuincy Rideau has been equally critical. In Friday’s win, Rideau recorded a near triple-double with 16 points, eight rebounds and 17 assists in 32 minutes. Over his last three games, he has averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 10.3 assists.

The Phoenix have leaned on balanced scoring. Forward Skyler White added 23 points and eight rebounds on Friday, while guard Jaxon Brenchley contributed 17 points and nine rebounds.

Sunday’s game marks the sixth meeting between the teams this season. Cheshire won the previous five by an average margin of 18.2 points. The closest contest was a 100-90 victory on Jan. 18 in Cheshire. Surrey’s last win in the series came Dec. 4, 2025, a 79-76 decision at home.

Surrey’s recent form suggests an uphill battle. Since the Bristol win, the 89ers have lost three straight, including a 120-117 overtime defeat to Glasgow on April 17. The defense has been porous, allowing 100 or more points in four of those losses.

Cheshire, meanwhile, has been strong at home. The Phoenix have won 11 of their last 13 at Cheshire Oaks Arena, with their only losses coming to London and Newcastle.

Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time.
