Grambling Edges Alcorn State in High-Scoring Saturday Thriller

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — Grambling outlasted Alcorn State 63-59 on Saturday in an NCAA Football Championship Division game at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium. The Tigers moved to 3-2 this season, while the Braves slipped to 3-3. The high-scoring affair featured a combined 122 points, five touchdown passes from Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert and a four-touchdown effort from Grambling quarterback Ashton Frye. The back-and-forth contest kept the crowd engaged from the opening quarter through a frantic fourth, with both teams producing explosive plays in key moments. Grambling’s home victory came despite Tolbert’s huge day and a resilient Alcorn State offense that repeatedly answered when the Tigers appeared to seize control.

Tolbert, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound quarterback from Hollywood, Fla., completed 18 of 31 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran 15 times for 33 yards. His favorite targets included Damien Jones, who had four receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and Jamarr Ebron, who caught three passes for 121 yards and two scores. Malachi Augustus caught a 3-yard touchdown pass, and Omarion Blakes contributed a 19-yard reception and a 16-yard punt return. Tyree Kelly added a 6-yard catch. The Braves’ passing game kept pressure on Grambling throughout, but Grambling’s defense found enough stops and disruptive plays to preserve the win.

Frye, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound quarterback, finished with 203 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding 61 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. He completed 11 of 17 passes and helped the Tigers match Alcorn State’s offensive pace. Jordan Bride added seven receptions for 108 yards, while Nae’Saan Dickerson had four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. Tony Phillips Jr. ran once for 15 yards and returned a kickoff 10 yards. Jayshaun Johnson returned two kickoffs for 38 yards, and Kingston Jones totaled 112 kick-return yards and a touchdown. Katrevrick Banks also made a significant special-teams play with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The first quarter set the tone. Alcorn State struck first when F. Robertson rushed 4 yards for a touchdown, and Kenyon Bowyer made the extra point. Grambling responded when J. Robinson connected with Tyson George for a 54-yard touchdown, and Theodore Caballero kicked the extra point. The Tigers then took the lead when D. Ford rushed 2 yards for a score, with Caballero again converting. Alcorn State scored 14 points in the first quarter, and Grambling matched that total. The Braves added 17 points in the second quarter, while the Tigers scored 7. Tolbert found Ebron for a 76-yard touchdown early in the second, then connected with Augustus for a 3-yard score later in the quarter. Grambling’s Ashton Frye had a 2-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty, but he came back on the next play for a 12-yard scoring run. Caballero’s extra point gave the Tigers another answer.

The third quarter turned into a track meet. Grambling scored 28 points in the period, while Alcorn State posted 21. The Tigers opened the second half with a special-teams jolt when Katrevrick Banks returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown after Carson Wilt’s 62-yard kick. Caballero added the extra point. Alcorn State answered when Tolbert hit Damien Jones for a 13-yard touchdown, and Bowyer kicked the extra point. Bowyer later added a 40-yard field goal for the Braves. Grambling’s Diego Alfaro attempted a 29-yard field goal late in the third quarter, but the kick was no good. Even with that miss, the Tigers had built momentum with their highest-scoring quarter of the game.

The fourth quarter delivered more drama as both teams traded scores. E. Temple rushed 4 yards for a touchdown, and Bowyer’s extra point brought the Braves closer. Frye answered with a 5-yard touchdown run, and Caballero converted. Tolbert then found Ebron for a 40-yard touchdown, and Bowyer’s kick kept Alcorn State within striking distance. F. Robertson rushed 2 yards for another Alcorn State touchdown, and Bowyer converted again. D. Ford capped a Grambling drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Caballero’s extra point helped the Tigers hold on. The sequence of quick scores, long passes and red-zone conversions made the final minutes critical, and Grambling’s ability to answer each Alcorn State burst proved decisive.

Grambling’s defense had several important contributors. Jon Horton recorded eight tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hurries. Marcellius Johnson also had eight tackles. Kyran McConnell and Dinellson Exume each finished with six tackles, with Exume adding a sack. Jamal Jordan had four tackles, while Lonell Cunningham, Louis Foster and Jordan McWain each recorded three. Alcorn State’s defense was led by Dillon Crowell, who made 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a quarterback hurry. Mahamadou Diarra added seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. Jordan Daniel and Brent Barnes each had six tackles, with Daniel adding a quarterback hurry. Timothy Jasper made five tackles. Ricardo Butler had four tackles. Gideon Spottsville finished with four tackles and half a sack. Tayvion Haney added a tackle. The Braves’ defense struggled to contain Grambling’s balanced attack, especially in the third quarter, but it kept Alcorn State in the game with timely stops and pressure on Frye.

Alcorn State’s record now stands at 3-3, while Grambling sits at 3-2. The Braves will look to bounce back in their next game, while the Tigers will try to build on a win that showcased their offense and special teams. Tolbert’s 411-yard, five-touchdown performance was one of the game’s defining efforts, but Frye’s four total touchdowns and Grambling’s ability to match every Alcorn State score ultimately made the difference. The Tigers also received key plays from George, Bride, Eaton, Banks and Jones, while the Braves got big days from Jones, Ebron and Wright. The game was a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in an NCAA Football Championship Division matchup, especially when both offenses are operating at a high level.
