Wildcats Edge Texans in Tight Non-Conference Showdown

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections and swung on a critical fourth-quarter goal-line stand, the Villanova Wildcats edged the Tarleton State Texans 26-21 on Saturday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.

The contest, a clash of 12-win teams, saw Villanova overcome a disastrous start and a potent Tarleton State offense to secure the victory. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 34-23 win for the Texans, who were also given a 60.8 percent probability to win by the same service’s ELO system.

Tarleton State erupted early, capitalizing on Villanova miscues to build a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter. On the Texans’ first offensive play from scrimmage, quarterback Victor Gabalis connected with receiver Peyton Kramer on an 80-yard touchdown strike just over three minutes into the game. The Texans’ defense then immediately provided another opportunity, blocking a Villanova punt to set up a short field at the Wildcats’ 12-yard line. Four plays later, backup quarterback Daniel Greek powered in from a yard out to give the home team a 14-0 advantage with 7:30 remaining in the opening period.

Villanova, steadied by quarterback Pat McQuaide and fueled by the relentless running of Ja’briel Mace, began to claw back. The Wildcats orchestrated a 15-play drive that bridged the first and second quarters, culminating in a 31-yard field goal by J. Barnum to get on the board. The momentum shifted decisively moments later when Wildcats defensive back Anthony Hawkins intercepted a Gabalis pass near midfield.

Taking over at the Tarleton State 45, Villanova needed just three plays to find the end zone. On a trick play, receiver Braden Reed took a lateral and launched a 27-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Kopecky. The failed extra point left the score at 14-9, but the Wildcats had seized control. They added another Barnum field goal, from 42 yards, just before halftime to trim the deficit to 14-12 at the break.

The third quarter featured a rapid exchange of scores. Tarleton State extended its lead on its opening drive of the half, as Gabalis found Trevon West for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 21-12. Villanova responded instantly. On the second play of the ensuing drive, Mace broke free for a spectacular 47-yard touchdown run, cutting through the Texans’ defense to bring the Wildcats within two points. McQuaide then kept the ball on a successful two-point conversion run, tying the game at 21-21.

Villanova completed its comeback early in the fourth quarter. A methodical 11-play, 68-yard drive was capped by McQuaide’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Reed, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the day at 26-21 with 12:49 to play.

The most important sequence of the game followed, as Tarleton State mounted a desperate, prolonged response. The Texans’ drive, which began with a 75-yard touchdown run by Tylan Hines that was nullified by a holding penalty, stretched 17 plays and consumed over nine minutes of clock. They converted multiple third and fourth downs, aided by Villanova penalties, to push to the Wildcats’ 11-yard line.

Facing first-and-goal, the Wildcats’ defense stiffened. After an incomplete pass and a Gabalis run that gained 4 yards, the Texans faced third-and-goal from the 7. Two consecutive Gabalis passes intended for Trevon West in the end zone fell incomplete. On fourth down with 1:52 remaining, Gabalis again targeted West, but the pass was broken up in the end zone by Villanova’s D. Bostic, sealing the victory for the Wildcats. The turnover on downs allowed Villanova to run out the clock.

Villanova’s offense was a model of balance and ball control. McQuaide, the top star for the Wildcats, completed 16 of 33 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown while adding 22 rushing yards on seven carries. His management of the game was pivotal. The backbone of the attack was Mace, who amassed 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, consistently gashing the Texans’ defense for critical gains.

For Tarleton State, Gabalis finished 12 of 23 for 210 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted once and sacked four times. Kramer was his top target, hauling in four passes for 104 yards and the long early score. Hines worked for 75 yards on 19 carries. Defensively, the Texans were led by Blake Smith and Jadan Aubert, who each recorded six tackles, with Smith adding an interception.

The win improves Villanova’s record to 13-2, while Tarleton State falls to 12-3. The Wildcats will host Illinois State on Saturday, Dec. 20.
