Gators Overpower Seminoles in Rivalry Showdown

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a dominant in-state rivalry performance fueled by a historic rushing display, the Florida Gators defeated the Florida State Seminoles 40 to 21 on Saturday afternoon before a raucous crowd at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The game, a stark departure from pregame projections that narrowly favored the Seminoles, was controlled from start to finish by the Gators’ relentless ground attack and a stifling defensive effort that capitalized on Florida State’s mistakes.

Florida running back Jadan Baugh delivered a performance for the ages, single-handedly dismantling the Seminoles’ defense. The sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia, carried the ball 38 times for a staggering 266 yards and two touchdowns, consistently breaking tackles and gashing the Florida State front for critical gains. His workhorse effort was the cornerstone of a Florida offense that methodically imposed its will.

While Baugh dominated on the ground, Florida quarterback DJ Lagway efficiently managed the game. The Willis, Texas, native completed 15 of 24 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to targets including J. Michael Sturdivant, who caught a 34-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and tight ends Hayden Hansen and Tony Livingston, who each caught scoring passes.

The Gators set the tone early. After forcing a quick three-and-out from the Seminoles on their opening drive, Florida marched down the field, culminating in a 23-yard field goal from Trey Smack. Following a Florida State punt, the Gators’ offense again found the end zone, with Lagway connecting with Sturdivant on a 5-yard scoring strike to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive and take a 10-0 lead.

Florida State, which had been stagnant offensively, finally found a rhythm in the second quarter. Quarterback Tommy Castellanos, a dynamic dual-threat from Waycross, Georgia, engineered a 7-play, 80-yard drive. He capped it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Micahi Danzy, cutting the deficit to 10-7.

The two rivals traded blows throughout the period. Florida answered with a punishing 15-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock, with Lagway finding Livingston for a 9-yard touchdown to push the lead back to 17-7.

Castellanos responded, leading the Seminoles on a 75-yard drive just before halftime. He showcased his versatility, completing key passes to Lawayne McCoy and eventually scrambling for a 4-yard touchdown run with 1:11 remaining to send the teams into the locker room with Florida leading 17-14.

Any momentum the Seminoles carried into the break was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter. The Gators’ defense stiffened, and their offense recommitted to Baugh. On their second possession of the half, Lagway found Hansen for a 3-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 24-14.

After another Florida State punt, the Gators delivered the decisive blow. They embarked on a 12-play, 58-yard drive that was almost exclusively Baugh, who carried the ball nine times on the drive, including a powerful 22-yard touchdown run that gave Florida a commanding 31-14 lead.

The Gators’ defense, led by linebackers Myles Graham and Aaron Chiles, and safety Bryce Thornton, consistently harassed Castellanos. Thornton and Graham each recorded a sack, while the unit as a whole tallied multiple tackles for loss and consistently forced the Seminoles into long-yardage situations.

Florida State mounted a final push in the fourth quarter. Castellanos led a 12-play, 83-yard drive, finishing it with a 17-yard touchdown pass to McCoy to pull within 34-21 with just over three minutes remaining.

Any hope of a miraculous comeback was snuffed out when Florida State’s ensuing onside kick attempt failed. The Gators then put the game completely out of reach, handing the ball to Baugh on six consecutive plays. He ripped off gains of 15 and 12 yards before plunging into the end zone from 12 yards out for his second touchdown with 56 seconds left to seal the 40-21 victory.

Castellanos finished with 240 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing for 77 yards and a score. McCoy was his primary target, hauling in six passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, linebacker Stefon Thompson was a bright spot for the Seminoles, recording 10 total tackles.

For Florida, the win was a defensive triumph as much as an offensive one. Safety Ben Hanks III sealed the game with a late interception, while the entire unit held firm against a potent Seminoles attack for the majority of the contest.

The victory improves Florida’s record to 4-8 to conclude its season, while Florida State finishes its year at 5-7. The Gators’ decisive win in the annual rivalry clash provides a positive conclusion to an otherwise challenging season for both programs.
