Dartmouth at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal at Stevenson Field on Saturday, the Brown Bears erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Dartmouth Big Green 35-28, snapping Dartmouth’s three-game winning streak and reaching .500 on the season.

The game was ultimately decided by a defensive play, as Brown defensive back Alejandro Bello intercepted a pass from Dartmouth quarterback Grayson Saunier and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 4:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. The pick-six gave Brown its first lead of the contest and capped a 28-point second-half surge by the Bears.

Dartmouth had controlled the game for the first three quarters, building a 28-14 lead. The Big Green struck first, with Saunier connecting with Grayson O’Bara on a 13-yard touchdown pass to cap their opening drive. Brown answered late in the first quarter as quarterback James Murphy found Matt Childs for a 19-yard score, tying the game at 7-7.

The second quarter became a shootout. Brown took its first lead of the day when Childs plunged into the end zone on a 6-yard run. Dartmouth responded immediately, with Saunier hitting tight end Chris Corbo on a 35-yard touchdown pass to even the score. Murphy then led the Bears on a 75-yard drive, finishing it with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Delaney to go ahead 21-14.

Dartmouth, however, had the final say of the half. Saunier engineered a masterful two-minute drill, culminating in a 20-yard touchdown strike to Ky’Dric Fisher with 12 seconds left, sending the teams into halftime tied at 21.

The Big Green reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, grinding out a 14-play, 54-yard drive that was finished by a 3-yard Myles Craddock touchdown run, making it 28-21. The Bears’ offense, which had been stymied for much of the second half, finally broke through early in the fourth quarter. Murphy orchestrated a 70-yard drive, tying the game at 28-28 with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Miller.

The momentum shifted decisively on the ensuing Dartmouth possession. After driving into Brown territory, a promising drive ended when Saunier’s pass was picked off by Bello, who weaved his way through traffic for the game-winning score. It was the third interception of the day for Saunier, with Brown’s John Perdue and Cap Davis also recording picks.

Saunier finished the game 24 of 41 for 274 yards and three touchdowns, adding 26 yards on the ground. His primary targets were Corbo, who had eight catches for 83 yards and a score, and O’Bara, who caught seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. The Dartmouth running game was led by Craddock, who had 46 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

For Brown, Murphy was exceptionally efficient, completing 22 of 27 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 21 yards. Childs was the offensive workhorse, contributing 47 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with five receptions for 61 yards and a receiving score.

The loss drops Dartmouth to 7-3 on the season, while Brown improves to 5-5. The result was an upset according to pregame projections, which had heavily favored the Big Green.
