Brown Rallies Past Dartmouth with Fourth-Quarter Surge
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal at Stevenson Field on Saturday, the Brown Bears erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the Dartmouth Big Green 35-28, snapping Dartmouth’s three-game winning streak and reaching .500 on the season.
The game, a back-and-forth Ivy League contest that defied pregame projections, was ultimately decided by a defensive touchdown in the fourth quarter that swung the momentum permanently in the Bears’ favor.
Dartmouth, which entered the contest as a slight favorite according to statistical models, opened the game with authority. On the game’s first possession, Brown quarterback James Murphy’s second pass was intercepted by Dartmouth linebacker Zyion Freer-Brown, giving the Big Green prime field position. Dartmouth quarterback Grayson Saunier capitalized on the short field, methodically moving the offense before connecting with receiver Grayson O’Bara on a 13-yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 lead.
Brown responded with a lengthy 13-play, 80-yard drive that showcased its balanced attack. Murphy completed key passes to Trevor Foley and Solomon Miller, and running back Matt Childs finished the drive with a 19-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter.
The second quarter became a shootout. After Dartmouth’s Saunier was intercepted by Brown linebacker John Perdue, the Bears engineered another long scoring drive. This time, Childs powered in from six yards out to give Brown its first lead at 14-7.
The Big Green answered immediately. Saunier led a swift five-play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a 35-yard touchdown strike to tight end Chris Corbo, knotting the score at 14-14. Brown, however, reclaimed the lead just before halftime. Murphy engineered a 68-yard drive, finishing it with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Delaney to put the Bears up 21-14.
With time winding down in the half, Saunier executed a two-minute drill to perfection. He marched Dartmouth 75 yards in 11 plays, finally hitting Ky’Dric Fisher on a 20-yard scoring pass with just 12 seconds remaining. The game went into halftime tied at 21-21.
Dartmouth seized control out of the locker room, embarking on a marathon 16-play, 54-yard touchdown drive that consumed over half of the third quarter. The drive, which featured a heavy dose of running back Myles Craddock, was capped by his three-yard touchdown plunge, giving the Big Green a 28-21 lead.
The Bears’ offense, stifled for much of the second half, finally broke through early in the fourth quarter. Murphy led an 80-yard drive, finishing it with a six-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Miller to tie the game at 28-28 with 13:02 remaining.
On the ensuing Dartmouth possession, the game’s critical turning point arrived. Driving into Brown territory, the Big Green’s momentum was halted when running back D.J. Crowther fumbled, with Brown’s Ike Odimegwu recovering at the Bears’ 46-yard line.
After the Brown defense forced a punt, Dartmouth got the ball back with a chance to retake the lead. Instead, disaster struck for the Big Green. Saunier’s pass intended for O’Bara was intercepted by Brown defensive back Alejandro Bello, who returned it 74 yards for a touchdown, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and giving Brown a 35-28 lead with 4:50 left on the clock.
Dartmouth had two final possessions to tie the game. The first ended when Saunier was intercepted in the end zone by Cap Davis. After a defensive stop gave the Big Green one last chance with under a minute to play, their final, desperate drive ended with a turnover on downs, sealing the victory for Brown.
Statistically, the game was a tale of two efficient quarterbacks. Dartmouth’s Grayson Saunier completed 24 of 41 passes for 274 yards with three touchdowns but was plagued by three critical interceptions. Brown’s James Murphy was remarkably efficient, completing 22 of 27 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Murphy also added 21 yards on the ground.
Key receiving performances included Dartmouth’s Grayson O’Bara, who had seven catches for 83 yards and a score, and Chris Corbo, who added eight receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. For Brown, Matt Childs was a versatile weapon, rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 61 yards and another score.
The victory improves Brown’s record to 5-5 overall, while Dartmouth falls to 7-3. The Bears’ defense, which forced five turnovers including the game-sealing pick-six, was the defining unit in a contest that was projected to be a lower-scoring affair. The combined score of 63 points surpassed the pregame over/under line of 50.5.
