Wofford rolls past Chattanooga to reach .500
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — J.T. Fayard passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns, and Gerald Modest rushed for 76 yards and two scores to power the Wofford Terriers to a decisive 35-13 victory over the Chattanooga Mocs in a non-conference college football game Saturday at Gibbs Stadium.
The Terriers, who evened their season record at 6-6, controlled the game from the outset, scoring in all four quarters and capitalizing on key Chattanooga mistakes. The Mocs, who managed all of their offensive output in the second quarter, fell to 5-7 on the season.
Wofford set the tone on its opening possession, marching 75 yards in just under two minutes. The drive was capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Fayard, a quarterback from Katy, Texas, to Colby Alexander for the game’s first points.
Chattanooga’s offense struggled to find its footing early, with a promising first-quarter drive ending in a critical turnover. Mocs quarterback Battle Alberson of Gulf Breeze, Florida, fumbled on a sack at the Wofford 27-yard line, where it was recovered by Terriers linebacker Alijah Williams.
The Terriers extended their lead early in the second quarter. After a short Chattanooga punt gave Wofford favorable field position, Modest, a running back from Miami, Florida, finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge, making the score 14-0.
Chattanooga responded with its most productive stretch of the game. The Mocs engineered a 12-play, 55-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by Ryan Ingram. The score cut the deficit to 14-7.
Wofford answered immediately, however, with Modest breaking free for a 14-yard touchdown run to complete a 70-yard drive and restore the Terriers’ two-touchdown advantage.
Just before halftime, Chattanooga struck again. Journey Wyche, a running back from Louisville, Kentucky, ripped off a 21-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining in the half. The extra point attempt failed, sending the teams to the locker room with Wofford leading 21-13.
Any momentum the Mocs carried into the break was quickly extinguished in the third quarter. On Chattanooga’s first possession of the second half, Alberson’s pass was intercepted by Wofford defensive back Maximus Pulley of Fort Worth, Texas, who returned it 24 yards to the Chattanooga 29-yard line.
The Terriers capitalized on the short field, with Fayard connecting with Ivory Aikens on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Aikens, a receiver from Miami, Florida, finished with six catches for 91 yards.
Wofford put the game completely out of reach on the first play of the fourth quarter. Fayard threw his third touchdown pass of the day, a 4-yard strike to Isaiah Scott, to push the lead to 35-13.
Chattanooga’s offense, which moved the ball at times, was ultimately undone by sacks and an inability to finish drives in scoring territory. Alberson completed 21 of 32 passes for 215 yards but was sacked five times. His primary target was Josh Williams, who hauled in 11 receptions for 118 yards. The Mocs’ ground game was led by Wyche, who gained 53 yards on six carries, and Ingram, who added 45 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts.
For Wofford, Fayard’s efficient 22-for-28 passing performance was complemented by a balanced rushing attack. Beyond Modest’s production, Ihson Jackson-Anderson added 43 yards on nine carries. The Terriers’ defense was stifling, holding Chattanooga scoreless in three quarters and generating multiple key takeaways and stops.
The victory gives Wofford a winning record for the first time this season after starting the year 0-3. Chattanooga concludes its season with the road loss. The game’s outcome defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose ELO system had given Chattanooga a slight 53.4 percent probability to win, while its game simulator had predicted a much closer 30-23 victory for Wofford.
