Jackson State Holds Off Alcorn State for Rivalry Win

LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — In a hard-fought rivalry clash defined by explosive plays and a dramatic finish, the Jackson State Tigers held off a resilient Alcorn State Braves squad 27-21 on Saturday at Spinks-Casem Stadium.

Jackson State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert orchestrated a balanced offensive attack, completing 21 of 33 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns while adding 32 yards on the ground. His primary target was Tyran Warren, who hauled in seven receptions for 111 yards and both of Tolbert’s scoring passes. The Tigers’ ground game was powered by Reggie Davis, who rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The game’s momentum swung decisively in the final minute. With Alcorn State driving for a potential game-winning score, Jackson State’s defense delivered the decisive blow. On a first-down play from the Alcorn State 40-yard line with just over a minute remaining, Braves quarterback Jared Lockhart was stripped of the ball on a sack, and Jackson State’s Orlandus McLaurin recovered the fumble to seal the victory.

Jackson State established early dominance, racing out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers’ defense set the tone, forcing a quick stop before their offense embarked on a methodical drive. Tolbert capped the series with a 64-yard touchdown strike to Warren, showcasing the big-play ability that would trouble Alcorn State all afternoon. Davis added a 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that proved critical.

Alcorn State, however, refused to capitulate. The Braves chipped away at the lead, scoring a touchdown in each of the final three quarters. Lockhart was efficient, completing 15 of 17 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. His favorite receiver was the versatile Nate Rembert, who caught seven passes for 120 yards and a spectacular 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Running back Ahmad Miller provided a significant spark for the Braves, rushing for 106 yards on 15 carries.

The Braves’ comeback attempt was a testament to their persistence. After falling behind 24-7, they closed the gap to 24-21 early in the fourth quarter. The Jackson State defense, however, stiffened in the red zone, forcing a short field goal that extended the lead to 27-21 and set the stage for the frantic final minutes.

With the win, Jackson State improved its season record to 9-2, solidifying a successful campaign. Alcorn State’s record moved to 5-7, concluding a season of marked improvement after a slow start. The victory for the Tigers avenged a preseason projection from Interstat’s game simulator that had favored Alcorn State, while their ELO system had heavily favored Jackson State, a prediction the Tigers ultimately fulfilled in the tense final moments.
