Old Dominion rolls past Georgia Southern in lopsided road victory
STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Old Dominion Monarchs delivered a commanding performance to dismantle the Georgia Southern Eagles 45 to 10 on Saturday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
The game was a thorough domination by the visiting Monarchs, who improved to 8-3 on the season, while the home-standing Eagles fell to 5-6. The lopsided result defied pregame projections that heavily favored Georgia Southern, which had been installed as a 10.5-point favorite and was given a slight majority chance to win by statistical models.
Old Dominion set the tone immediately, scoring on its opening possession and never looking back. The Monarchs’ offense operated with ruthless efficiency, particularly on the ground, amassing a staggering rushing total that Georgia Southern had no answer for.
The first quarter was a showcase of Old Dominion’s intent. The Monarchs took the opening kickoff and marched down the field, with Kadarius Hargrove punching in a 1-yard touchdown run to cap the drive. After forcing a Georgia Southern punt, Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph engineered another scoring drive, highlighted by his own 20-yard and 12-yard scrambles before Obie Sanni finished it with a 21-yard touchdown run. The Monarchs led 14 to 0 after the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter saw more of the same. Joseph continued to dissect the Eagles’ defense with his arm and legs. He connected with Jordan Bly for a 16-yard touchdown pass, and Hargrove added his second rushing touchdown of the day from 2 yards out. A late field goal by Noah Eichner gave Old Dominion a commanding 31 to 0 lead heading into halftime.
Any hope of a Georgia Southern comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. The Monarchs took the second-half kickoff and embarked on another long, methodical drive, with Hargrove scoring his third touchdown on a 12-yard run. Joseph later added a exclamation point with a 20-yard touchdown run of his own, making the score 45 to 0.
The Eagles finally got on the board late in the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal from Tripp Bryant, avoiding a shutout. They added a consolation touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the game when backup quarterback Turner Helton found Dylan Gary for an 11-yard scoring pass.
The story of the game was the phenomenal performance of Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph. The junior from Newport Beach, California, was a dual-threat dynamo, completing 12 of 18 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 189 yards and another score. His ability to extend plays and pick up massive chunks of yardage on the ground demoralized the Eagles’ defense from the opening series.
In contrast, Georgia Southern’s offense never found its footing. Starter JC French IV of Roswell, Georgia, completed 16 of 24 passes for 147 yards but was intercepted once and sacked multiple times before being relieved. Helton, from Palos Verdes Estates, California, entered the game and led the lone touchdown drive, finishing 9 of 16 for 49 yards and the score. Marcus Sanders Jr. was a bright spot for the Eagles, catching four passes for 88 yards.
Defensively, Old Dominion was swarming, consistently pressuring the Georgia Southern quarterbacks and stifling the run game. For the Eagles, linebacker Brandon Tyson led all tacklers with nine, while defensive backs Ayden Jackson and Justin Meyers each had seven tackles. MJ Stroud recorded a sack and a forced fumble in the losing effort.
The victory marks another impressive step in Old Dominion’s season, which includes notable wins over Appalachian State and a road rout of Virginia Tech. They will look to continue their momentum when they host Georgia State next Saturday. Georgia Southern, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as it travels to face Marshall next Saturday, needing a win to secure bowl eligibility.
