Cyclones Dominate Jayhawks Behind Becht’s Three Touchdowns

AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a dominant performance at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, the Iowa State Cyclones methodically dispatched the Kansas Jayhawks, securing a decisive victory to improve their season record.

The Cyclones set the tone early with a commanding opening drive, marching 75 yards in 14 plays. The drive, which consumed over six minutes of game clock, was capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rocco Becht to wide receiver Brett Eskildsen, giving Iowa State a lead it would not relinquish.

Iowa State extended its advantage in the second quarter. Running back Carson Hansen, who was a workhorse for the Cyclones all afternoon, plunged into the end zone from 4 yards out to finish another sustained drive. Later in the quarter, kicker Kyle Konrardy connected on a 55-yard field goal, sending the Cyclones into halftime with a 10-point lead.

Any hope of a Kansas comeback was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter. The Jayhawks managed to find the end zone on a 4-yard run by running back L. Williams, cutting the deficit. However, the Cyclones responded with two quick-strike touchdowns to seize control of the game. Becht found Eskildsen for a second scoring connection, this time from 20 yards, and then hit tight end Benjamin Brahmer for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

The Iowa State defense, which had been sturdy throughout, delivered the final blow early in the fourth quarter. Defensive back Marcus Neal Jr. intercepted a pass from Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels in the end zone, halting a promising Jayhawks drive that had reached the Iowa State 14-yard line. The Cyclones then put the game completely out of reach with a 38-yard touchdown run by running back Aiden Flora with just over a minute remaining to provide the final margin.

Iowa State’s offense was efficient and balanced. Becht, the quarterback from Wesley Chapel, Florida, was highly effective, completing 18 of 23 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Hansen was the engine of the ground game, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while also adding 32 receiving yards on four catches. Eskildsen was Becht’s primary target, hauling in six receptions for 73 yards and two scores.

The Cyclones’ defense was led by linebacker Trey Lathan, who recorded 13 tackles for the Jayhawks. For Iowa State, linebackers Caleb Bacon and Carson Van Dinter, along with defensive back Drew Surges, were consistently around the ball, contributing to a unit that stifled the Kansas offense for three quarters.

For Kansas, the offense struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Jalon Daniels of Lawndale, California, completed 13 of 23 passes for 154 yards and was intercepted once. He also added 25 rushing yards. Backup quarterback Cole Ballard of Westfield, Indiana, entered the game late and led a scoring drive, finishing with 37 passing yards and adding a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Levi Wentz was a bright spot, catching three passes for 53 yards.

With the loss, Kansas falls below .500 on the season. The Jayhawks will look to regroup quickly as they prepare to host Utah in their next contest. Iowa State, now with seven wins, will travel to face Oklahoma State, aiming to build on this convincing home victory. The final score surpassed the projected over/under total.
