Eastern Illinois at Lindenwood
ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Interstat) — The Lindenwood Lions dominated the second half, turning a competitive game into a lopsided victory by defeating the Eastern Illinois Panthers 42 to 12 on Saturday at Hunter Stadium.
The Lions improved to 5-6 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 3-8.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Eastern Illinois staying within a touchdown for the first three quarters before Lindenwood erupted for 21 points in the final period. The Lions’ offense, led by quarterback Nate Glantz, proved too potent for the Panthers’ defense to contain.
Glantz was efficient and dynamic, completing 13 of 21 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 44 yards and another score. His favorite targets were Jalen Smith, who caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, and Rico Bond, who added four receptions for 65 yards. Running back Jared Rhodes was a force on the ground, rushing for 76 yards and two touchdowns, including a 39-yard score in the third quarter.
Eastern Illinois struggled to find offensive consistency, cycling through three quarterbacks. Connor Wolf completed 17 of 29 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Glantz and Cole LaCrue also saw significant action. The Panthers’ ground game was led by Charles Kellom, who rushed for 58 yards.
The Panthers’ scoring came entirely from three field goals and a single touchdown. Nico Carrier connected on field goals from 25 and 26 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. Eastern Illinois found the end zone late in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Wolf to DeAirious Smith, but the subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 21-12.
From that point, it was all Lindenwood. The Lions answered immediately with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Glantz to Smith early in the fourth quarter. They then capitalized on strong field position, with Steve Hall punching in a 5-yard rushing touchdown. Glantz put the final exclamation point on the victory with a 44-yard touchdown strike to Drew Krobath.
Defensively, Eastern Illinois managed two interceptions, with Isaiah Houi and Moses Alexander each coming down with a pick. However, they were unable to slow the Lions’ multifaceted attack when it mattered most. The Panthers’ special teams also had a critical breakdown, allowing a blocked punt in the second quarter that set up a short Lindenwood touchdown drive.
The final score defied the pregame expectations, as Eastern Illinois had been installed as a 5.5-point favorite. The combined score of 54 points also went under the projected over/under line of 49.5. The result closely mirrored the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a Lindenwood victory with a final score of 41-33.
Eastern Illinois will face a monumental challenge next week, traveling to face the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. Lindenwood will hit the road to take on Southeast Missouri State.
