Brown Outlasts Columbia in High-Scoring Ivy League Contest
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the Brown Bears outlasted the Columbia Lions 32 to 29 in a wild Ivy League shootout on Saturday at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.
The game, which featured a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback by the Lions and a last-minute defensive stand by the Bears, defied the projections that heavily favored Columbia. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Columbia victory by a score of 24 to 21, and its ELO system gave the Lions a 76.10 percent probability to win. Columbia had been installed as a 2.5-point pregame favorite.
The contest was ultimately decided by the right arm of Brown quarterback James Murphy and a crucial late fumble. Murphy, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound junior from Reading, Massachusetts, delivered a masterful performance, completing 31 of 43 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns.
Brown seized control early, dominating the first half. Murphy engineered a methodical 13-play, 78-yard drive late in the first quarter, capping it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ty Pezza. The Bears added a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.
After forcing a Columbia punt, the Bears extended their advantage in the second quarter. Murphy connected with Pearson Hill on an 18-yard touchdown strike, and Drew Crabtree’s successful kick gave Brown a 15-0 lead.
Columbia finally found its footing on the ensuing possession. Lions quarterback Chase Goodwin, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore from Houston, Texas, answered with a sharp drive of his own. He found Beckett Robinson on a 24-yard touchdown pass, and Hugo Merry’s kick cut the deficit to 15-7, which held until halftime.
The Lions carried that momentum into the second half. They received the kickoff and marched 65 yards on a punishing 14-play drive that consumed over six minutes. Goodwin finished it with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Titus Evans. The Lions then successfully executed a two-point conversion pass from Robinson to pull even at 15-15.
Brown responded with a long drive of its own, but the Columbia defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing the Bears to settle for a 23-yard Crabtree field goal to retake the lead at 18-15.
Columbia’s offense, powered by the relentless running of Michael Walters, continued to press. Walters, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound back from Brookfield, Connecticut, finished the game with 123 rushing yards on 27 carries. He capped a 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge early in the fourth quarter. Merry’s kick gave Columbia its first lead of the game at 22-18.
The back-and-forth affair continued as Murphy immediately led Brown down the field. He hit Trevor Foley for a 46-yard gain and finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matt Childs, putting the Bears back in front 25-22.
The game then took a dramatic turn when a botched punt attempt by Brown’s Malcolm Flynn resulted in a fumble recovered by Columbia at the Bears’ 28-yard line. Four plays later, Goodwin threw his third touchdown of the day, an 8-yard strike to Evans. Merry’s kick put the Lions ahead 29-25 with just over four minutes remaining.
Undaunted, Murphy engineered the game-winning drive. He completed a 44-yard pass to Foley to set up Brown inside the Columbia 10-yard line. Two plays later, Murphy found Childs on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 left on the clock. Crabtree’s kick gave Brown a 32-29 lead.
Columbia had one final chance to tie or win the game. Goodwin moved the Lions near midfield, but on a completion to Robinson, Brown defensive back Elias Archie forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Ryan Haley at the Columbia 37-yard line with 1:40 remaining. Brown was able to run out the clock from there to secure the victory.
For Brown, Foley was Murphy’s primary deep threat, hauling in six receptions for 140 yards. Childs was a workhorse, rushing for 50 yards and adding 59 receiving yards with two critical touchdown catches.
For Columbia, Goodwin finished an efficient 17 of 25 for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Robinson led all Lions receivers with six catches for 97 yards and a score, while Evans caught six passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns.
The win improves Brown’s season record to 4 wins and 5 losses, while Columbia falls to 1 win and 8 losses. Brown will host Dartmouth next Saturday, while Columbia will travel to face Cornell.
