Holy Cross at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Holy Cross Crusaders erupted for 30 second-half points to secure a 37-20 road victory over the Bucknell Bison on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The win, just the second of the season for Holy Cross, was powered by a dominant ground attack that amassed over 300 yards. The Crusaders improved to 2-9, while Bucknell fell to 5-6.
The first quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams failing to put points on the board. Bucknell broke the deadlock early in the second quarter when quarterback Ralph Rucker IV connected with Nate Anderson on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The point-after attempt failed, leaving the Bison with a 6-0 lead.
Holy Cross responded before halftime, with Max Mosey plunging into the end zone on a 7-yard run. The successful extra point by Luis Palenzuela gave the Crusaders a 7-6 lead, a margin they would not relinquish.
The second half belonged entirely to Holy Cross. The Crusaders came out of the locker room and immediately extended their lead with a 44-yard field goal from Palenzuela. The momentum continued as running back Nyeoti Punni broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run, capping a drive that pushed the Holy Cross lead to 17-6.
The Crusaders’ defense then made a critical play, as linebacker Adam Due intercepted a pass from Bucknell quarterback Nicholas Penuvchev. The turnover led to another Palenzuela field goal, this time from 24 yards, stretching the lead to 20-6.
Bucknell showed a spark late in the third quarter. Penuvchev found Sam Milligan for a 25-yard touchdown strike, cutting the deficit to 20-13.
Any hopes of a Bison comeback were quickly extinguished in the fourth quarter. Palenzuela nailed his third field goal of the day, a 46-yarder, to make it 23-13. On Holy Cross’s next possession, Punni delivered the dagger, ripping off a 53-yard touchdown run to extend the Crusaders’ advantage to 30-13.
Bucknell answered with a big play of its own, as Penuvchev and Milligan connected again, this time on a 55-yard scoring pass to make it 30-20. But Holy Cross sealed the game on the ensuing drive, with Jayden Clerveaux pounding in a 5-yard touchdown run to bring the final score to 37-20.
The Crusaders’ running back duo was unstoppable. Clerveaux rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Punni was equally effective, gaining 131 yards and scoring twice on 15 attempts. Quarterback Dominic Campanile managed the game efficiently, throwing for 138 yards.
For Bucknell, Penuvchev finished with 237 passing yards and two touchdowns, both to Milligan, who had a standout performance with 154 receiving yards on five catches. The Bison offense, however, was hampered by multiple sacks and struggled to sustain drives against a resurgent Holy Cross defense.
The result was a surprise based on pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Bucknell victory, 25-24, and its ELO system gave Holy Cross a 59.1% probability to win. The Crusaders had been installed as a slight pregame underdog with a spread of +2.5. The total score of 57 points went over the betting line of 51.5.
Holy Cross will look to build on this performance when it hosts Georgetown next Saturday. Bucknell will travel to face Colgate.
