Holy Cross Rushes Past Bucknell for Second Win
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — In a result that defied both the betting markets and their own disappointing seasons, the Holy Cross Crusaders delivered a commanding and unexpected road victory, defeating the Bucknell Bison 37-20 on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The game, played on November 15, 2025, was a stark reversal of fortune for both teams. Holy Cross entered the contest with a 1-9 record and was projected by Interstat’s ELO system as a 59 percent favorite, yet pregame betting lines had installed the Crusaders as 2.5-point underdogs. The Crusaders not only covered that spread but dominated it, improving their season record to 2-9. Bucknell, which fell to 5-6, saw its hopes for a winning season dim with the loss.
The contest was a tale of two contrasting offensive philosophies. Holy Cross leaned heavily and effectively on a powerful ground game that amassed nearly 300 yards, while Bucknell’s attack, though prolific through the air, was ultimately undone by a relentless Holy Cross pass rush and critical mistakes.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle, ending in a scoreless tie despite both teams moving the ball. The deadlock was broken early in the second quarter when Bucknell quarterback Ralph Rucker IV connected with Nate Anderson on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The subsequent point-after attempt failed, leaving the Bison with a 6-0 lead.
Holy Cross responded decisively. The Crusaders engineered a methodical drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Max Mosey. The successful extra point by Luis Palenzuela gave Holy Cross a 7-6 lead, which they would not relinquish. The Crusaders’ defense then stiffened, forcing a series of Bucknell punts and sacks to maintain the narrow one-point advantage heading into halftime.
Any hopes for a Bucknell comeback were quickly extinguished in the third quarter. The Holy Cross defense set the tone immediately, as Christian Ross forced a fumble from Bucknell running back Tariq Thomas on the opening drive of the half, which Ross recovered. The turnover led to a 44-yard field goal from Palenzuela, extending the lead to 10-6.
The Crusaders’ offense then found its rhythm. On their next possession, running back Nyeoti Punni broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run, finishing a drive that showcased the team’s punishing rushing attack. The Palenzuela kick made it 17-6. The situation worsened for Bucknell just moments later when quarterback Nicholas Penuvchev, who had entered the game, was intercepted by Holy Cross linebacker Adam Due. The interception led to another Palenzuela field goal, this time from 24 yards, pushing the lead to 20-6.
Bucknell managed to answer with a touchdown drive, culminating in a 25-yard scoring pass from Penuvchev to Sam Milligan. The successful PAT cut the deficit to 20-13 late in the third quarter.
Holy Cross, however, continued to impose its will in the fourth quarter. Palenzuela nailed his third field goal of the day, a 46-yarder, to make it 23-13. Then, the Crusaders delivered the knockout blow. On a first-down play, Punni took a handoff and exploded through the Bucknell defense for a 53-yard touchdown run, his second of the day. The score gave Holy Cross a commanding 30-13 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
Bucknell’s Penuvchev and Milligan connected once more for a 55-yard touchdown to keep the Bison’s faint hopes alive, narrowing the gap to 30-20. But Holy Cross running back Jayden Clerveaux sealed the victory with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:51 left, capping a dominant performance by the Crusaders’ backfield.
The statistical leaders underscored the game’s narrative. For Holy Cross, the two-pronged rushing attack of Jayden Clerveaux and Nyeoti Punni was devastating. Clerveaux rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Punni added 131 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Quarterback Dominic Campanile managed the game efficiently, completing 10 of 17 passes for 138 yards.
For Bucknell, quarterback Nicholas Penuvchev put up strong numbers in relief, throwing for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 13-of-22 passing. His primary target was Sam Milligan, who had a spectacular receiving day with 154 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Despite the aerial production, the Bison’s offense was hampered by multiple sacks and the crucial third-quarter turnover.
The total score of 57 points went over the pregame over/under line of 51.5. Holy Cross will look to build on this victory when they host Georgetown next Saturday, November 22. Bucknell will travel to face Colgate on the same day.
