Alcorn State rallies past Grambling for home victory
LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by methodical offense and opportunistic defense, the Alcorn State Braves pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Grambling Tigers 27-16 on Saturday at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
The contest, a defensive struggle for three quarters, saw Alcorn State break a 14-14 tie with two decisive touchdowns in the final period to secure the victory and improve its season record to 5-6. Grambling, which had won four of its last five games, fell to 7-4.
Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert, a junior from Hollywood, Florida, was the engine of the Braves’ offense, efficiently managing the game. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 167 yards and added 56 rushing yards on nine carries, consistently extending drives with his legs and his arm. His primary target was Jarvis Rush, who hauled in 10 receptions for 83 yards.
The Braves’ ground game was anchored by Reggie Davis, who rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter. His backfield mate, Jacorian Sewell, added a first-quarter rushing touchdown.
Grambling’s offense, led by quarterback Hayden Benoit of Loreauville, Louisiana, struggled to find a consistent rhythm against the Alcorn State defense. Benoit completed 16 of 33 passes for 142 yards and was sacked twice. The Tigers’ most consistent weapon was running back Andre Crews, who ground out 69 yards on 16 carries.
The game began as a battle of field position and field goals. Grambling struck first with a 37-yard field goal from Theodore Caballero of San Antonio, Texas, capping a 13-play drive that stalled in the red zone. Alcorn State responded with a sustained march of its own, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown run by Sewell with 54 seconds left in the opening quarter. Lorenzo Garcia of Austin, Texas, added the extra point for a 7-3 Braves lead.
Alcorn State extended its lead in the second quarter with another methodical drive. A 12-yard scramble by Tolbert on third down kept the possession alive, and Davis eventually powered in from one yard out with 6:29 remaining in the half. Garcia’s kick made it 14-3.
Grambling answered just before halftime. Benoit engineered a two-minute drill, connecting with Barron Miles Jr. of Montreal, Canada, for a key 12-yard gain and later scrambling for a 15-yard run to move into Alcorn State territory. The drive stalled, but Caballero was true from 29 yards out as time expired in the half, cutting the deficit to 14-6.
The Tigers carried that momentum into the second half, capitalizing on a short field after a poor Alcorn State punt. A 12-yard run by Byron Eaton Jr. of Dallas, Texas, and a 12-yard reception by Tyson George of Zachary, Louisiana, set up Grambling deep in Braves territory. The drive again stalled, but Caballero nailed his third field goal, this time from 27 yards, to bring Grambling within 14-9 midway through the third quarter.
Grambling’s defense then provided the game’s first major turnover. Early in the fourth quarter, Alcorn State was backed up near its own goal line, and a bad snap resulted in a fumble that Grambling cornerback Tyrell Raby of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, scooped up and returned 10 yards for a touchdown. The score gave Grambling its first lead since the opening minutes at 16-14.
The lead was short-lived. Tolbert calmly led the Braves on a 75-yard answering drive, mixing runs by Davis and timely completions to Rush. The march was capped by Davis’ second touchdown of the day, a 1-yard plunge with 4:50 remaining. Garcia’s extra point put Alcorn State back in front, 21-16.
Grambling had a chance to mount a game-winning drive, but the Alcorn State defense rose to the occasion. On a critical fourth down with just over a minute to play, Benoit’s pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage under pressure from Alcorn State defender Eric Thomas of Starkville, Mississippi, resulting in a turnover on downs.
The Braves then iced the game in bizarre fashion. After Grambling used its final timeouts to force a punt, return man Delano Franklin of Bellflower, California, fumbled the kick, and Thomas fell on the loose ball in the end zone for a final defensive touchdown as time expired.
Alcorn State punter Demetrion Duvall of Akron, Ohio, was a key weapon, averaging 42.3 yards on seven punts and repeatedly pinning Grambling deep in its own territory.
The Braves will look to build on the win when they host rival Jackson State next Saturday. Grambling will aim to rebound in its regular-season finale at Southern on Nov. 29.
