North Alabama at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a dominant display on both sides of the ball, the Tarleton State Texans overwhelmed the North Alabama Lions 61-0 on Saturday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.

The Texans improved their season record to 10-1, while the Lions fell to 2-9.

Tarleton State’s offense was explosive from the opening drive, scoring on its first three possessions to build a commanding 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Texans added 19 points in the second quarter, seven in the third and 14 in the fourth to complete the shutout.

Quarterback Victor Gabalis of Everett, Washington, led the offensive onslaught, completing 12 of 16 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns before exiting the game. His primary target was Peyton Kramer of Fort Worth, Texas, who hauled in three receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown. The connection between Gabalis and Kramer was established early, with a 78-yard touchdown pass on the Texans’ first offensive play from scrimmage.

The Texans’ receiving corps showcased its depth, as four different players caught touchdown passes. Trevon West of Arlington, Texas, Cody Jackson of Richmond, Texas, Bryce Parker of Corona, California, and tight end Danny Joiner of Kansas City, Missouri, all found the end zone.

The ground game was equally potent, led by Tylan Hines of Mount Pleasant, Texas, who rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Backup quarterback James Paige of Newnan, Georgia, also contributed on the ground with 36 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Jaden Pete of Houston, Texas, broke off a 21-yard run.

Defensively, the Texans were impenetrable, forcing five North Alabama turnovers. The secondary intercepted four passes, with Markell Johnson of Edmond, Oklahoma, Avian Rice of Fort Myers, Florida, Omar Emmons of Greenwood, Mississippi, and Ja’Voni Melidor of Columbia, South Carolina, each recording one. The defense also recorded multiple sacks and consistently stifled any attempt by the Lions to establish offensive rhythm.

North Alabama’s offense struggled throughout the contest, cycling through three quarterbacks who combined to complete 10 of 27 passes for 116 yards and four interceptions. DC Tabscott of Franklin, Tennessee, started the game but was replaced by John Austin Wood of Fulton, Mississippi, and later Ty Watkins of Cumming, Georgia.

The Lions’ running game managed only 75 total yards, with Jayvian Allen of Freeport, New York, leading the way with 40 yards on 12 carries. The team’s deepest drive of the game ended in a missed 36-yard field goal attempt by Ian Vachon in the second quarter.

Punter Adam Watford was a bright spot for North Alabama, averaging 48.1 yards on eight punts, including a long of 72 yards.

The shutout victory for Tarleton State defied the pregame projections, which had the Texans as heavy favorites but expected a closer contest. The combined score of 61 points fell just under the projected over/under line.

Tarleton State will look to continue its successful season when it hosts Austin Peay next Saturday. North Alabama returns home to face Southern Utah on the same day.
