Texans Rout Lions, Clinch Share of Conference Title

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding display on both sides of the ball, the Tarleton State Texans delivered a decisive 61 to 0 victory over the North Alabama Lions on Saturday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.

The Texans’ offense was a model of efficiency, scoring on their first five possessions and amassing a 40-point lead by halftime, while their defense was impenetrable, forcing six turnovers and holding the Lions to just 84 net yards of total offense.

Tarleton State quarterback Victor Gabalis, a 6-foot-3, 218-pound junior from Everett, Washington, set the tone early and finished the day with a near-perfect stat line, completing 12 of 16 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns before exiting the game. His primary target was Peyton Kramer, a wide receiver from Fort Worth, who hauled in three catches for 128 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown on the Texans’ third offensive play of the game.

The scoring started quickly for the home team. After forcing a three-and-out from North Alabama, Gabalis found Kramer deep down the left sideline for the 78-yard score just over three minutes into the contest. The Texans’ defense then produced the first of many short fields for the offense when linebacker Markell Johnson recovered a fumbled punt snap at the North Alabama 18-yard line. Two plays later, Gabalis connected with tight end Danny Joiner on a 4-yard pass to extend the lead to 14 to 0.

The first quarter onslaught continued as running back Tylan Hines, who finished with 80 yards on 12 carries, capped a quick 80-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run to make it 21 to 0.

North Alabama’s offense, which cycled through quarterbacks John Austin Wood, DC Tabscott, and Ty Watkins, could find no rhythm against the aggressive Texans defense. The Lions’ best drive of the day came late in the second quarter, marching from their own 20-yard line to the Tarleton State 16. However, the drive stalled, and a 36-yard field goal attempt by Ian Vachon sailed wide left, preserving the shutout.

Tarleton State capitalized on the missed opportunity, marching 80 yards in just five plays, with Gabalis hitting Trevon West for a 22-yard touchdown pass. After another quick stop by the defense, Gabalis engineered another scoring drive, finding Cody Jackson for a 2-yard touchdown to push the lead to 35 to 0.

The Texans added a field goal just before halftime. A Gabalis pass was intercepted by North Alabama’s Brian Dilworth, but the Lions’ offense immediately gave the ball back. A fumble on the return was recovered by Tarleton State’s Bryce Parker, setting up a 34-yard field goal by Brad Larson as time expired in the half for a 40 to 0 lead.

The second half saw the Texans continue their dominance with backup quarterbacks taking over. Daniel Greek, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Argyle, Texas, was flawless, completing all six of his pass attempts for 84 yards and a touchdown. His 26-yard scoring strike to Bryce Parker in the third quarter made it 47 to 0.

The Texans’ ground game took over in the final period. Hines broke free for his second touchdown of the day, a 17-yard run, and third-string quarterback James Paige, a 5-foot-10 freshman from Newnan, Georgia, capped the scoring with a 1-yard plunge. Paige led the team in rushing with 36 yards on 10 carries.

Defensively, the Texans were relentless. They intercepted five passes, with Johnson, Avian Rice, Omar Emmons, and Ja’Voni Melidor each recording one. The unit consistently harassed North Alabama’s quarterbacks, recording multiple sacks and limiting the Lions to just 107 passing yards and negative 23 yards rushing.

For North Alabama, the loss drops their season record to 2 wins and 9 losses. The Lions managed only 10 first downs and turned the ball over six times. Running back Jayvian Allen was a rare bright spot, gaining 40 yards on 12 carries. The Lions will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Southern Utah.

Tarleton State, now 10-1 on the season, will conclude their regular season at home next Saturday against Austin Peay. The victory exceeded the expectations of Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a 42 to 27 Texans win, and easily covered the pregame spread that had North Alabama as a 33.5-point underdog. The total score of 61 points went under the over/under line of 60.5.
