Idaho State rolls past Weber State behind Cooke’s big day
POCATELLO, Idaho (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Idaho State Bengals delivered a commanding performance, overwhelming the Weber State Wildcats 31-3 on Saturday at the ICCU Dome.
The contest was a stark departure from expectations, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a high-scoring affair with Weber State winning 41-37. Instead, Idaho State’s defense was impenetrable, and its offense, led by quarterback Jordan Cooke, was consistently productive, holding the Wildcats to a single fourth-quarter field goal.
Idaho State set the tone early, marching down the field on its opening possession. Cooke was surgical, connecting with receiver Damien Morgan three times for 62 yards on the drive. Cooke capped the series himself, scrambling for a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Bengals up 7-0 with 12:51 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bengals’ dominance continued in the second quarter. After a 52-yard deep shot from Cooke to Michael Shulikov advanced the ball into Weber State territory, running back Dason Brooks finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown plunge, extending the lead to 14-0.
Just before halftime, Idaho State struck again. Cooke found Morgan for a 29-yard touchdown pass, exploiting the Weber State secondary and giving the Bengals a 21-0 lead heading into the break. Morgan finished the day as Cooke’s primary target, hauling in eight receptions for 122 yards and the score.
Any hope of a Weber State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as the Bengals added 10 more points. Kicker Trajan Sinatra converted a 48-yard field goal, and Cooke later connected with Ian Duarte on an 11-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 31-0. Cooke’s final stat line was impressive, completing 24 of 39 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 65 yards and another score.
Weber State’s offense, led by quarterback Dijon Jennings of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, struggled to sustain drives against a relentless Idaho State defense. Jennings completed 24 of 33 passes for 192 yards but was unable to guide the Wildcats into the end zone. The team’s sole points came early in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Sloan Calder, avoiding a shutout.
The Wildcats’ punter, Henry Way of Eltham, Victoria, was a busy man, punting nine times for 390 yards as the offense repeatedly stalled.
With the victory, Idaho State improves its season record to 5-6. The Bengals will look to secure a winning season when they travel to face Idaho on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Weber State falls to 3-8 with the loss, its fourth in a row. The Wildcats will conclude their season at home against Northern Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 22.
The game’s total score of 34 points fell far under the over/under line of 60.5, and Weber State, which had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +13.5, failed to cover in the lopsided defeat. The result also contradicted Interstat’s ELO system, which had given Idaho State just a 53.90 percent probability to win.
