Memphis at East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — Katin Houser connected with Payton Mangrum on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 68 seconds remaining to lift East Carolina to a 31-27 comeback victory over Memphis in an American Athletic Conference clash on Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirates, who trailed by 14 points in the third quarter, sealed the win when Mike Wright Jr. intercepted a Memphis pass in the final seconds.
East Carolina improved to 7-3 on the season, while Memphis fell to 8-3.
The game was a tale of contrasting halves and shifting momentum. East Carolina struck first with a methodical 15-play, 91-yard drive capped by a 1-yard London Montgomery touchdown run late in the opening quarter.
Memphis responded decisively in the second quarter, erupting for 17 points to seize control. The Tigers tied the game on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brendon Lewis to Matt Adcock. The momentum swung heavily in Memphis’ favor on the ensuing possession when Sutton Smith broke free for an 84-yard touchdown run, giving the Tigers a 14-7 lead. A 44-yard field goal by Gianni Spetic as time expired in the half sent Memphis into the break with a 17-10 advantage.
The Tigers extended their lead early in the third quarter. Lewis engineered a 68-yard drive, which he finished himself with a 7-yard scoring run to put Memphis ahead 24-10.
East Carolina answered with a relentless offensive push. Houser, who finished 23 of 34 for 332 yards and two touchdowns, led a 71-yard drive that he capped with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The Pirates’ defense then forced a punt, and on the next drive, Montgomery broke a 23-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 24-24 late in the third quarter. Montgomery was a workhorse for the Pirates, rushing for 103 yards and two scores.
The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle. Memphis reclaimed the lead with a 30-yard Spetic field goal with 2:29 left in the game, set up by a 19-yard completion from Lewis to Cortez Braham Jr. That drive stalled after Lewis was sacked for a 5-yard loss by Zion Wilson, one of his two sacks on the day.
Trailing 27-24, East Carolina took over at its own 25-yard line with 2:24 on the clock. Houser was methodical, completing passes of 12 yards to Mangrum, 6 yards to Desirrio Riles, and 18 yards to Anthony Smith to move the Pirates into Memphis territory. After a 5-yard run by Montgomery, Houser found Mangrum in the end zone for the game-winning score.
Memphis had one final chance, moving the ball to the East Carolina 49-yard line, but Wright’s interception on the game’s final play secured the victory for the Pirates.
Lewis was efficient for Memphis, completing 32 of 43 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 61 yards and another score. Smith was the standout on the ground for the Tigers, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries. Braham led all receivers with nine catches for 79 yards.
Defensively, the Pirates were led by Ja’Marley Riddle with nine tackles, while Samuel Dankah and DJ Johnson Jr. each had eight. Everett Roussaw Jr. recorded a game-high 11 tackles and a sack for Memphis.
The win marks another step forward for East Carolina, which was projected to lose by the pregame spread and various statistical models. Memphis will look to rebound when it hosts Navy in its next contest, while East Carolina travels to face Texas-San Antonio.
