East Carolina rallies to edge Memphis in American Athletic clash
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a dramatic, back-and-forth American Athletic Conference battle, the East Carolina Pirates erased a double-digit deficit to defeat the Memphis Tigers 31 to 27 on Saturday before an announced crowd at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The victory improved East Carolina’s record to 7-3 on the season, while Memphis fell to 8-3.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Memphis dominating the second quarter and East Carolina mounting a furious comeback in the second half, capped by a game-winning touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining.
East Carolina struck first, concluding a methodical 15-play, 91-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by running back London Montgomery late in the opening quarter. The Pirates’ early lead was short-lived, as Memphis erupted for 17 points in the second quarter.
The Tigers tied the game early in the period when quarterback Brendon Lewis connected with tight end Matt Adcock on a 5-yard scoring pass. Memphis then seized momentum with a breathtaking 84-yard touchdown run by Sutton Smith, who broke through the right side and outran the Pirates’ defense to give the Tigers a 14-7 advantage.
After the teams traded field goals, Memphis took a 17-10 lead into halftime.
Memphis extended its lead on its opening drive of the third quarter, with Lewis finishing a 68-yard march with a 7-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 24-10. The Pirates responded immediately, embarking on a 10-play, 71-yard drive that quarterback Katin Houser finished with a 1-yard sneak into the end zone.
East Carolina’s defense then forced a punt, and the offense went right back to work. Montgomery provided the exclamation point, breaking free for a 23-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle. Memphis managed to break the tie with a 30-yard field goal from Gianni Spetic with 2:29 left on the clock, capping a 14-play drive that consumed over six minutes but stalled in the red zone.
Trailing 27-24, East Carolina took over at its own 25-yard line with 2:24 to play. Houser engineered a masterful game-winning drive, completing 5 of 6 passes for 60 yards. The decisive play came with 1:08 remaining, as Houser found a wide-open Payton Mangrum on a 31-yard touchdown strike down the seam, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Memphis had one final chance, moving the ball to near midfield, but a last-ditch pass from Lewis was intercepted by East Carolina’s Mike Wright Jr. to seal the Pirates’ victory.
Houser, the Pirates’ quarterback from Anaheim, California, was instrumental in the win, completing 23 of 34 passes for 332 yards and the game-winning touchdown. His favorite target was Brock Spalding, who hauled in five catches for 88 yards. Montgomery anchored the ground game, carrying the ball 27 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
For Memphis, Lewis was efficient, completing 32 of 43 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 61 yards and another score on the ground. Smith was the big-play threat for the Tigers, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
Defensively, East Carolina was led by a host of tacklers. Ja’Marley Riddle recorded nine tackles, while Samuel Dankah and DJ Johnson Jr. each had eight. Zion Wilson was a force on the defensive line, registering five tackles, including two sacks.
The outcome defied some pregame projections. While Interstat’s ELO system had given Memphis a 55.6 percent probability to win, and the Tigers were installed as a 2.5-point favorite, the game simulator had projected a narrow East Carolina victory. The combined point total of 58 also went over the betting over/under line of 57.5.
East Carolina looks to continue its winning momentum next Saturday when it travels to face Texas-San Antonio. Memphis will return home to host Navy on Thursday, Nov. 27.
