Michigan at Northwestern
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Dominic Zvada kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired to lift Michigan to a 24-22 victory over Northwestern in a dramatic Big Ten contest Saturday at a sold-out Wrigley Field.
The Wolverines survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Wildcats and a pair of critical interceptions to escape with the win before an announced crowd of 38,223.
Michigan appeared to be in control, leading 21-9 entering the final quarter, but the game unraveled quickly for the visitors. Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone capped a 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-16.
On the ensuing possession, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood was intercepted by Northwestern defensive back Braden Turner, who returned the ball 29 yards to the Wolverines’ 6-yard line. Caleb Komolafe scored on a 6-yard run on the next play, but Stone’s pass on the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Wildcats with a narrow 22-21 lead with 12:05 remaining.
Underwood was intercepted again on Michigan’s next drive, this time by Robert Fitzgerald, giving Northwestern a chance to extend its lead. The Michigan defense held firm, forcing a punt and giving its offense one final chance with just over two minutes left on the clock.
Starting from his own 37-yard line, Underwood engineered a methodical, game-winning drive. He connected with receiver Andrew Marsh for a critical 21-yard completion on a reviewed play that moved the chains, and the Wolverines’ ground game, led by Bryson Kuzdzal, methodically worked the ball into field goal range. Michigan drained the clock to two seconds before sending out Zvada for the winning kick.
The game was a tale of two halves dominated by Michigan’s offense and a stunning Northwestern rally. After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolverines broke through in the second on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jordan Marshall. Northwestern responded with two field goals from Jack Olsen to make the score 7-6 at halftime.
Michigan seized momentum in the third quarter, scoring on back-to-back possessions. Underwood scrambled for a 9-yard touchdown run, and Marshall added his second rushing touchdown of the day, a 1-yard plunge, to build a 21-6 advantage. Olsen’s third field goal of the day late in the third quarter made it 21-9.
Underwood, a Detroit native, finished 21 of 32 for 280 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, adding 30 yards and a score on the ground. Marshall was the workhorse for the Wolverines, rushing for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Marsh was Underwood’s primary target, hauling in 12 receptions for 189 yards.
For Northwestern, Stone completed 13 of 27 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats’ defense was led by linebacker Braydon Brus, who recorded 13 tackles and a sack, and Fitzgerald, who had a game-high 15 tackles and an interception.
With the win, Michigan improves to 8-2 on the season. Northwestern falls to 5-5. The Wolverines travel to face Maryland next Saturday, while the Wildcats host Minnesota.
