Mississippi State at Missouri

BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — Ahmad Hardy rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns, and the Missouri defense returned two interceptions for scores, powering the Tigers to a 49-27 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The game, a non-conference matchup played far from either team’s campus, was dominated by Missouri’s ground game and its opportunistic defense. Hardy, a running back from Monticello, Mississippi, was the workhorse, averaging 12 yards per carry on his 25 attempts. His 72-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 43-yard score in the fourth quarter helped the Tigers pull away.

Missouri improved its record to 7-3, while Mississippi State fell to 5-6.

The Tigers set the tone early, answering a Mississippi State field goal with two first-quarter touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Zollers of Royersford, Pennsylvania, connected with Donovan Olugbode for a 26-yard score and then found Joshua Manning for a 34-yard strike, giving Missouri a 14-10 lead after a back-and-forth opening period.

Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen of Shreveport, Louisiana, scored on a 2-yard run as time expired in the first quarter to tie the game at 14. The Bulldogs then took a brief 17-14 lead on a Kyle Ferrie field goal in the second quarter.

Missouri reclaimed the lead before halftime with a methodical drive capped by Hardy’s 10-yard touchdown run, making it 21-17 at the break.

The third quarter proved to be the decisive stretch. After Shapen scored on a 3-yard run to cut the Missouri lead to 21-20, the Tigers responded with 21 unanswered points. Hardy broke his long 72-yard touchdown run to extend the lead.

On the ensuing Bulldogs possession, the game turned decisively in Missouri’s favor. Shapen’s pass was intercepted by cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. of Saint Louis, who returned it 19 yards for a touchdown.

Mississippi State managed to answer with a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Kamario Taylor to Seydou Traore, but the Tigers’ defense struck again early in the fourth quarter. Defensive back Marvin Burks Jr., also of Saint Louis, picked off a Shapen pass and returned it 28 yards for a score, pushing the Missouri lead to 42-27.

Hardy’s final touchdown, a 43-yard run with just over 11 minutes remaining, sealed the victory for the Tigers.

Shapen finished the game 19 of 33 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions before being relieved by Taylor, who threw for 36 yards and a score. The Bulldogs’ offense was hampered by six sacks from a relentless Missouri pass rush.

Defensively, Missouri was led by linebacker Khalil Jacobs of Niceville, Florida, who recorded 10 tackles. The Tigers’ defense tallied two sacks each from Darris Smith of Baxley, Georgia, and Chris McClellan of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Missouri will travel to face Oklahoma next Saturday, while Mississippi State will host in-state rival Ole Miss on Friday, Nov. 28.
