Missouri Routs Mississippi State Behind Hardy’s 300 Yards, Defensive Scores
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a high-scoring affair that defied pregame expectations, the Missouri Tigers overpowered the Mississippi State Bulldogs 49 to 27 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The game, which saw a combined 76 points, sailed over the projected total in a contest where Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy delivered a historic performance, rushing for 300 yards and three touchdowns to spearhead the Tigers’ offensive explosion.
Missouri improved its record to 7-3, while Mississippi State fell to 5-6 with its second consecutive loss.
The first quarter set the tone for a back-and-forth battle, with both offenses finding early success. Missouri struck first as quarterback Matt Zollers connected with Donovan Olugbode for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Mississippi State answered with a 47-yard field goal from Kyle Ferrie, but the Tigers quickly extended their lead. Zollers found Joshua Manning for a 34-yard scoring strike, capping a drive fueled by Hardy’s powerful running.
The Bulldogs closed the opening frame strong, engineering a 75-yard drive that ended with quarterback Blake Shapen plunging into the end zone from two yards out, narrowing the gap to 14-10.
After a second quarter that saw both defenses tighten, Missouri managed to add to its lead just before halftime. Following a critical turnover, a fumble recovered by Missouri’s Toriano Pride Jr. that he returned 62 yards, the Tigers capitalized. Hardy finished the short drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, sending Missouri into the locker room with a 21-10 advantage.
Mississippi State emerged from halftime with renewed vigor, marching 52 yards on their opening possession of the third quarter. Shapen capped the drive with his second rushing touchdown, a 3-yard scramble that brought the Bulldogs back within four points.
The momentum, however, was short-lived. On Missouri’s ensuing possession, Hardy broke the game open. The sophomore from Monticello, Mississippi, took a handoff and exploded through the middle for a breathtaking 72-yard touchdown run, restoring the Tigers’ two-score lead at 28-17.
The contest then unraveled for the Bulldogs on the very next play from scrimmage. Shapen’s pass was intercepted by Pride Jr., who returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. In a matter of seconds, a four-point game had become an 18-point Missouri lead.
Mississippi State showed resilience, responding with a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Backup quarterback Kamario Taylor, a change-of-pace option for the Bulldogs, found tight end Seydou Traore for a 3-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 35-24.
Any hope of a dramatic comeback was extinguished early in the fourth quarter. Shapen was intercepted again, this time by Missouri defensive back Marvin Burks Jr., who returned the pick 28 yards for a touchdown. On the Tigers’ next offensive play, Hardy delivered the final blow, breaking free for a 43-yard touchdown run, his third of the day, to put Missouri up 49-24.
Mississippi State added a late 41-yard field goal from Ferrie to conclude the scoring.
While Shapen threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score, he was also sacked five times and threw two critical interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Taylor contributed 36 passing yards, 22 rushing yards, and a touchdown pass in relief.
For Missouri, Zollers managed the game efficiently, completing 8 of 15 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. The story of the day, however, was Hardy and a swarming Tigers defense. Linebacker Khalil Jacobs led all tacklers with 10 stops, while the defense collectively recorded six sacks and three interceptions, two of which were returned for scores. Pride Jr. and Burks Jr. were the defensive heroes with their pivotal pick-sixes.
Mississippi State will look to secure bowl eligibility when it hosts in-state rival Ole Miss on Friday, Nov. 28. Missouri, now bowl-eligible, travels to face Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 22.
