Florida at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a relentless ground attack, Ole Miss leaned on running back Kewan Lacy to pull away from Florida in the fourth quarter and secure a 34-24 victory on Saturday night at a packed Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

A crowd of 68,138 watched as the Rebels improved to 10-1 on the season, while the Gators fell to 3-7.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair for three quarters before Ole Miss sealed the win with two late touchdowns. The Rebels’ offense was spearheaded by Lacy, a sophomore from Dallas, who delivered a workhorse performance with 224 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. His final score, a 4-yard plunge with 1:43 remaining, effectively put the game out of reach after the Gators failed to convert on a desperate fourth-down attempt in their own territory.

Florida, which entered the game as an 11.5-point underdog, showed resilience throughout. The Gators took a 24-20 lead into halftime after a back-and-forth second quarter that saw both teams find the end zone. Quarterback DJ Lagway of Willis, Texas, provided a spark for Florida, accounting for two touchdowns. He rushed for a 5-yard score in the first quarter and connected with J. Michael Sturdivant on a 57-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Lagway finished 16 of 31 for 218 yards through the air, adding 34 yards on the ground.

However, the Ole Miss defense stiffened in the second half, holding the Gators scoreless after the break. The Rebels’ defensive front, led by tackle Will Echoles who recorded six tackles and a quarterback hurry, consistently pressured Lagway and stifled Florida’s rushing attack. Linebacker Wydett Williams Jr. sealed the victory with a critical fourth-quarter interception.

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss of Grand Rapids, Michigan, managed the game efficiently, completing 26 of 35 pass attempts for 301 yards and a touchdown. His primary scoring strike was a 43-yard connection with De’Zhaun Stribling in the second quarter. Chambliss spread the ball to nine different receivers, with Harrison Wallace III leading the way with six catches for 68 yards.

The Rebels’ offense set the tone early with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard opening drive that consumed over five minutes and was capped by Lacy’s first touchdown. Florida responded with a quick-strike drive of its own, culminating in Lagway’s rushing touchdown. The Gators then took their first lead early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Jadan Baugh, who finished with 61 rushing yards and a score.

After the teams traded scores, Florida kicker Trey Smack nailed a 38-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Gators their four-point halftime advantage.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with Ole Miss being stopped on downs at the Florida 2-yard line on its most promising drive. The Rebels finally broke through on the first play of the fourth quarter, with Lacy’s second touchdown giving them a 27-24 lead they would not relinquish.

The Ole Miss defense was paced by Williams Jr. with eight tackles and an interception, while Florida’s defense saw safety Jordan Castell record a game-high 10 tackles.

The victory keeps Ole Miss in contention for a major bowl bid as it prepares for its regular-season finale next Friday at rival Mississippi State. Florida, meanwhile, will return home to host Tennessee next Saturday.
