Wildcats Edge Blue Hose in Defensive Struggle

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied both the oddsmakers and the statistical projections, the Davidson Wildcats eked out a 14-13 victory over the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Saturday at Richardson Stadium, riding a dominant first-quarter offensive outburst and a resilient defensive stand that lasted the final three periods.

The Wildcats, who entered the game with a 1-8 record and were installed as a 28.5-point pregame favorite, saw their early lead nearly vanish but managed to hold on against a Presbyterian squad that came in at 8-1 and was given a 68.6 percent probability to win by Interstat’s ELO system. The final score of 27 points combined fell dramatically short of the over/under line of 55.5.

Davidson’s offense came out firing, scoring all of its points in the game’s opening quarter. The initial touchdown was set up by a crucial defensive play. After Presbyterian’s opening drive stalled deep in Davidson territory, turning the ball over on downs, the Wildcats’ defense struck quickly. Safety Hayden Bender intercepted a pass from Presbyterian quarterback Ty Englehart at the Blue Hose 36-yard line and returned it to the 31.

Davidson quarterback Coulter Cleland, a native of Racine, Ohio, capitalized on the short field. He connected with tight end Langston Green of Spartanburg, South Carolina, on an 18-yard touchdown pass to put the Wildcats on the board first.

Presbyterian’s ensuing possession was a three-and-out, and a strong punt return by AJ Adams of Shelby, North Carolina, gave Davidson excellent starting position near midfield. The Wildcats then engineered a methodical 11-play, 71-yard drive that was powered almost exclusively by running back Mason Sheron. The junior from Leo, Indiana, carried the ball seven times for 37 yards on the possession, including a 19-yard burst. Cleland finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Sheron, giving the Wildcats a 14-0 lead with just 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

From that point forward, the Davidson offense went silent, but its defense was forced to rise to the occasion repeatedly. The Blue Hose, who amassed 279 rushing yards on the day, began to find their footing in the second quarter. A 10-play, 76-yard drive was highlighted by the running of Justin Montgomery of Davie, Florida, and Zach Switzer. Montgomery ripped off a 17-yard run to set up a 7-yard touchdown scramble by Englehart, the quarterback from Melbourne, Florida. The failed point after attempt kept the score at 14-6.

Presbyterian had a golden opportunity to draw closer just before halftime after Malik Lewis of Cocoa, Florida, recovered a Sheron fumble at the Davidson 41-yard line. The Blue Hose drove to the Wildcats’ 16 but turned the ball over on downs with 27 seconds left, failing to convert a fourth-down pass into the end zone.

The Blue Hose continued their ground-and-pound approach in the third quarter, embarking on a marathon 14-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over six minutes of game clock. Switzer was the workhorse, carrying the ball six times for 41 yards on the drive, including the final 7-yard touchdown run up the middle. Ethan Cartmel of Bluffton, South Carolina, added the extra point, pulling Presbyterian to within a single point at 14-13.

That one-point margin held for the final 23 minutes of the game, as both defenses tightened. Davidson’s best chance to extend its lead came early in the fourth quarter, driving to the Presbyterian 19-yard line, but a 35-yard field goal attempt by Christos Tzoumakas of Birmingham, Michigan, sailed wide left.

Presbyterian had two final chances to take the lead. Their first promising drive of the fourth quarter ended when Englehart was intercepted by safety Dominic Njoku of Richmond, Texas, at the Wildcats’ 35-yard line with just over two minutes remaining.

Davidson was unable to secure a game-clinching first down, giving the Blue Hose one last possession with 1:22 on the clock and no timeouts. Starting from their own 8-yard line, Englehart completed an 8-yard pass but was then sacked for a loss, forcing a fourth down. His final desperation pass fell incomplete, and Davidson took over, kneeling out the clock to seal the improbable victory.

Sheron was the offensive engine for Davidson, rushing for 89 yards on 20 carries and adding 18 receiving yards with a touchdown. Cleland finished 9-of-17 for 97 yards and two touchdowns. For Presbyterian, Montgomery led all rushers with 94 yards on 14 attempts, while Switzer added 86 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Englehart struggled through the air, completing 9 of 22 passes for 69 yards with two interceptions, though he added 42 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

The loss drops Presbyterian to 8-2 on the season, while Davidson improves to 2-8. The Blue Hose look to rebound next Saturday when they travel to face Saint Thomas (Minn.), while the Wildcats hit the road to take on Marist.
