Youngstown State outlasts Southern Illinois in high-scoring shootout

(Interstat) — In a wild, high-scoring affair that defied pregame projections, Youngstown State outlasted Southern Illinois 48-38 on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium in a pivotal Missouri Valley Football Conference matchup. The Penguins, propelled by a dominant third-quarter surge and a record-setting performance from running back Jaden Gilbert, improved their season record to 6-4, while the Salukis fell to an identical 6-4 mark.

The game was a tale of two halves, with Southern Illinois seizing early control before Youngstown State’s offense erupted after halftime. The victory was a stark reversal of the pregame expectations, as Southern Illinois had been installed as a 5.5-point favorite and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Penguins a 67.8 percent probability to win. The combined score of 86 points also dramatically eclipsed the over/under line of 58.5.

Southern Illinois quarterback DJ Williams came out firing, needing just three plays to give the Salukis a lead they would hold for the entire first half. On the game’s opening drive, Williams connected with Jay Jones on a 58-yard deep pass, and on the next play, he found Edward Robinson for a 12-yard touchdown pass. After a Youngstown State three-and-out, a fumbled punt return by the Penguins’ Max Tomczak, recovered by Southern Illinois’ Chris Presto, set up a 36-yard field goal by Paul Geelen. The Salukis’ offense continued its blistering pace, marching down the field on their next possession, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Williams to extend the lead to 17-0.

Youngstown State finally found an answer on the ensuing drive, with quarterback Beau Brungard engineering a 75-yard march. Brungard capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Ky Wilson, cutting the deficit to 17-7. The two teams then traded touchdowns in the second quarter. Williams threw his third touchdown of the half, a 23-yard strike to Vinson Davis III, to push the Saluki lead to 24-7. The Penguins responded with a methodical drive of their own, finished by a 5-yard Brungard rushing touchdown, sending the game to halftime with Southern Illinois leading 24-14.

Any momentum the Salukis carried into the break was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter as the Youngstown State offense shifted into a gear Southern Illinois could not match. The Penguins scored 21 unanswered points in the period, completely flipping the game on its head. Brungard found Wilson for a 17-yard touchdown, connected with Ethan Wright on a 19-yard scoring play, and then watched Gilbert break free for a breathtaking 40-yard touchdown run. Gilbert’s dash gave the Penguins their first lead of the game at 35-24 and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Southern Illinois, reeling from the onslaught, managed to stop the bleeding early in the fourth quarter. A determined drive, heavily featuring Robinson on the ground, ended with Williams hitting tight end Miles Marshall for a 2-yard touchdown. A failed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 35-30 in favor of Youngstown State.

The Penguins, however, had an immediate response. Brungard, showcasing his dual-threat ability, engineered another scoring drive, culminating in a 17-yard touchdown run of his own to extend the lead to 42-30. The Salukis’ ensuing drive stalled on downs at the Youngstown State 42-yard line, and the Penguins seemed to seal the victory with just over a minute remaining when Brungard tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Gilbert, making it 48-30.

Displaying resilience, Southern Illinois mounted a frantic, last-minute drive. Williams efficiently moved the Salukis down the field, and utility player Lem Wash punched in a 3-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left. A successful two-point conversion pass from Ryan Schwendeman cut the deficit to 48-38. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Youngstown State, allowing Brungard to take a knee and end the game.

Statistically, the game was a showcase for both offenses. Youngstown State’s Beau Brungard was magnificent, completing 26 of 35 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 104 yards and another score. His favorite target, Ky Wilson, caught seven passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns. The star of the day, however, was Jaden Gilbert, who amassed a staggering 193 all-purpose yards, rushing for 149 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries and adding three receptions for 44 yards and another score.

For Southern Illinois, DJ Williams put up prolific numbers in the losing effort, throwing for 361 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-42 passing and leading the team with 55 rushing yards. Edward Robinson was a workhorse on the ground, gaining 85 yards on 11 carries and catching a touchdown pass. Ryan Schwendeman was Williams’ top receiver, hauling in five catches for 96 yards.

The result sets up a crucial final two weeks of the regular season for both teams as they jockey for position in the conference standings. Youngstown State will host Indiana State next Saturday, while Southern Illinois returns home to face South Dakota.
