Western Illinois Rallies to Stun Lindenwood in Fourth-Quarter Comeback
MACOMB, Ill. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Western Illinois Leathernecks erased a 21-point first-quarter deficit to stun the Lindenwood Lions 24-21 on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Hanson Field.
The victory, sealed by a late fourth-quarter touchdown and a gutsy two-point conversion, snapped a two-game skid for Western Illinois and improved its record to 3-7. Lindenwood, which had raced out to an early lead, fell to 4-6 with the heartbreaking loss.
The game began as a afternoonmare for the home team. Lindenwood’s offense, led by quarterback Nate Glantz, was unstoppable on its opening drive. The Lions marched 75 yards in just nine plays, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Glantz to Jalen Smith. The drive was powered by the relentless running of Steve Hall, who broke off a 24-yard run to set up the score.
After forcing a Western Illinois punt, the Lions’ offense went right back to work. Another methodical drive, this one covering 77 yards, ended with Hall plunging into the end zone from 6 yards out. Hall was the engine of the drive, accounting for 57 of the yards, including a 36-yard burst that brought Lindenwood deep into Western Illinois territory.
By the time the first quarter ended, Lindenwood held a commanding 14-0 lead and had completely dominated time of possession and field position.
Western Illinois finally found its footing in the second quarter. A sustained drive, heavily reliant on the legs of running back Markell Holman, got the Leathernecks on the board. Quarterback Cason Carswell connected with tight end Brandon Lanier on a 17-yard touchdown strike to cut the deficit to 14-7.
The momentum seemed to be shifting, but Lindenwood answered with a scoring drive of its own to start the second half. Glantz engineered a 75-yard drive, finishing it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Rico Bond to extend the Lions’ lead to 21-7.
Western Illinois responded with a field goal from Antonio Chadha, a 41-yarder late in the third quarter, to make it 21-10, but the Lions still seemed in firm control as the game entered the final period.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Leathernecks. Their defense, which had been gashed early, began to stiffen, forcing key stops and creating turnovers. The comeback began in earnest with just over seven minutes remaining. Holman, who had been a workhorse all afternoon, broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 21-16.
On the ensuing Lindenwood possession, the game turned decisively. Glantz, under pressure, threw an interception to Western Illinois defensive back Justin Richardson in the end zone, snuffing out a promising Lions drive.
Given new life, the Leathernecks’ special teams then made a monumental play. A muffed punt by Lindenwood was recovered by Western Illinois’ Don Paul Keith at the Lindenwood 37-yard line with just over two minutes left on the clock.
Carswell immediately found receiver Demari Davis for a 27-yard gain down to the 9-yard line. Two plays later, on a gutsy call, Carswell hit tight end Alex Williams on an 8-yard touchdown pass to give Western Illinois its first lead of the day with just 1:21 remaining. Needing a two-point conversion to make it a three-point game, the Leathernecks executed a trick play, with Holman taking a pitch and throwing a successful pass to secure the 24-21 advantage.
Lindenwood had one final chance, but the Western Illinois defense held firm, sacking Glantz and forcing incomplete passes to seal the improbable victory.
Holman was the offensive catalyst for Western Illinois, carrying the ball 25 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Carswell finished 17 of 34 for 175 yards and two touchdowns.
For Lindenwood, Glantz was efficient, completing 20 of 31 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns, but his late interception proved costly. Hall was a force, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while also catching two passes. Smith led Lions receivers with four catches for 70 yards and a score.
The comeback victory defied pregame projections, as national statistical services had heavily favored Lindenwood to win. Western Illinois will look to build on the momentum when it hosts Southeast Missouri State next Saturday. Lindenwood will aim to regroup as it returns home to face Eastern Illinois.
