Richmond rallies to top Georgetown, snaps 4-game skid

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by momentum swings and a crucial fourth-quarter turnover, the Richmond Spiders overcame an early deficit to defeat the Georgetown Hoyas 31-24 on Saturday at Cooper Field.

The victory improved Richmond’s record to 6-4, while Georgetown fell to an even 5-5. The result defied pregame expectations, as Georgetown had been installed as a 4.5-point favorite, though statistical models gave Richmond a high probability of victory. The combined score of 55 points surpassed the over/under line of 45.5.

The contest began in disastrous fashion for the visiting Spiders. After an opening drive stalled and resulted in a 34-yard field goal from Jayden Alsheskie, Georgetown’s offense found immediate success. The Hoyas engineered two lengthy first-quarter touchdown drives, both capped by connections from quarterback Dez Thomas II to receiver Jimmy Kibble. The first was a 2-yard run by Savion Hart, and the second was a 17-yard pass to Kibble, giving the Hoyas a commanding 14-3 lead.

Richmond’s offense, led primarily by quarterback Kyle Wickersham in the first half, struggled to find consistency against a stout Georgetown defense. However, a spark just before the end of the first quarter shifted the game’s trajectory. Wickersham broke free for a 38-yard run, setting up the Spiders deep in Georgetown territory. On the first play of the second quarter, Aziz Foster-Powell punched in a 3-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 14-10.

The second and third quarters became a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and possessions. Georgetown managed to extend its lead early in the third quarter when Hart exploded for a 60-yard touchdown run, his second of the day, to make the score 21-10. Hart finished as the game’s leading rusher with 128 yards on 21 carries.

Richmond responded with a methodical drive of its own, but it was a change at quarterback that provided the necessary jolt. Ashten Snelsire took over under center and finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, pulling the Spiders back to within four points at 21-17 heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter belonged to Snelsire and the Spiders. He immediately connected with Ja’Vion Griffin on a 45-yard touchdown pass, giving Richmond its first lead of the game at 24-21. Griffin was a key target throughout, hauling in four receptions for 106 yards.

Georgetown answered with a long drive that consumed over six minutes of clock, but the Spider defense held firm in the red zone, forcing the Hoyas to settle for a 25-yard Thomas Anderson field goal to tie the game at 24-24.

The ensuing possession saw Richmond regain the lead for good. Snelsire engineered another scoring drive, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Andrew King, putting the Spiders up 31-24 with just over two minutes remaining.

Needing a touchdown to force overtime, Georgetown’s hopes were extinguished on the second play of its final drive. A botched snap was recovered by Richmond’s Braxton Lassiter, giving the Spiders the ball and allowing them to run out the clock. The turnover was the game’s only one and could not have come at a more critical moment.

Snelsire, though attempting only 10 passes, was highly efficient, completing five for 114 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner. Wickersham provided a strong ground component for the Richmond offense, rushing for 61 yards on five carries in addition to his 100 passing yards. For Georgetown, Thomas II was accurate, completing 12 of 15 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Kibble was his primary receiver with nine catches for 97 yards and a score.

The Spiders will look to continue their winning ways when they host Lafayette next Saturday. The Hoyas aim to get back to .500 when they face Fordham at home.
