Butler at Morehead State

HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive plays and a frantic final drive, Carter Cravens connected with Ryan Upp on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds remaining to lift Morehead State to a 31-30 victory over Butler in a non-conference football thriller on Saturday at Jayne Stadium.

The Eagles, who trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, secured their winning season, improving to 6-5, while the Bulldogs fell to an even 5-5.

Butler seized control early, capitalizing on a stunning special teams play. After Morehead State’s opening drive culminated in a 4-yard touchdown run by Isaac Stopke, Butler’s Ethan Loss fielded the ensuing kickoff at his own goal line and raced 100 yards for a touchdown to immediately tie the game. The Bulldogs then engineered a methodical 13-play, 74-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard Charlie Spegal plunge, to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs extended their advantage in the second quarter. Following a 33-yard field goal by Thomas Schwartz V for the Eagles, Butler answered with another long drive, finished by a 2-yard touchdown run from Loss, making it 21-10. The Eagles, however, struck back quickly. On their next offensive play, Cravens found Upp over the middle for a 57-yard touchdown bomb, cutting the deficit to 21-17.

Butler quarterback Reagan Andrew, who was a force on the ground throughout the day, was intercepted by Drayson Crane late in the half, setting up the Bulldogs for a 45-yard field goal by Ryan Short as time expired to take a 24-17 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle. Morehead State drew even at 24-24 when Jackson Lanier scored on a 3-yard run, capping a drive that was extended by a pass interference penalty. Butler responded by moving the ball deep into Eagles territory, but the drive stalled, and Short was good from 44 yards to put the Bulldogs back in front, 27-24, heading to the fourth.

Butler’s ground-centric offense, which saw Andrew rush for 74 yards and backup quarterback Gabe Passini add 31, chewed up clock in the final period. Another sustained drive resulted in a 43-yard field goal from Short, pushing the lead to 30-24 with 3:33 left on the clock.

That left the game in the hands of Cravens and the Morehead State offense. Starting at their own 25-yard line, the Eagles methodically moved down the field. Cravens was precise, completing 23 of 31 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns on the day. He repeatedly found his favorite target, Upp, who finished with nine receptions for 154 yards and the two scores, including the game-winner.

Facing a critical fourth down deep in Butler territory, Cravens hit Upp on a slant pattern for the decisive touchdown.

Butler had one final chance with 52 seconds remaining. Passini, in at quarterback for the final drive, managed to move the Bulldogs near midfield, but his fourth-down pass attempt fell incomplete, sealing the dramatic comeback victory for the home team.

The Eagles’ defense, which had been projected as a 12.5-point favorite by oddsmakers, secured the win with two key interceptions, one each by Crane and Jackson Benjamin. The combined point total of 61 fell well under the betting over/under of 48.5, defying the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 39-38 Butler victory. The Eagles also overcame the simulator’s ELO system, which had given Butler a 62 percent probability to win.

Morehead State concludes its regular season on the road at Drake on Nov. 22. Butler will look to rebound and secure a winning season with road games at San Diego on Nov. 15 and a home finale against Valparaiso on Nov. 22.
