Morehead State Edges Butler with Late Touchdown
HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive plays and a frantic final drive, Carter Cravens connected with Ryan Upp on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds remaining to lift the Morehead State Eagles to a dramatic 31-30 victory over the Butler Bulldogs on Saturday at Jayne Stadium.
The win, secured after a final defensive stand, improved Morehead State’s record to 6-5, while Butler fell to an even 5-5 on the season. The result defied the pregame projections, as the Eagles, despite being 12.5-point favorites, overcame a contest that saw multiple lead changes and a late Butler field goal that appeared it might be the winner.
The game’s opening moments set a chaotic tone. Morehead State’s offense marched efficiently down the field on the game’s first possession, capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from Isaac Stopke to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs’ response was immediate and electrifying. On the ensuing kickoff, Butler’s Ethan Loss fielded the ball at his own goal line and weaved through the Eagles’ coverage for a stunning 100-yard return touchdown, tying the game and shifting the momentum entirely.
Butler capitalized on that swing, embarking on a methodical 13-play, 74-yard drive that consumed over five minutes of clock. The drive was finished by Charlie Spegal’s 1-yard plunge into the end zone, giving the Bulldogs a 14-7 advantage late in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams trade scores. Morehead State’s Thomas Schwartz V connected on a 33-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-10. Butler answered with another sustained drive, this one culminating in a 2-yard touchdown run by Ethan Loss on an end-around, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-10.
The Eagles’ offense, led by the sharp passing of Cravens, responded swiftly. The quarterback from Cypress, Texas, found a rhythm and launched a 57-yard touchdown strike to his favorite target, Ryan Upp, pulling Morehead State back to within four points at 21-17.
Butler managed to add to its lead just before the half. After a Reagan Andrew interception gave the Eagles a chance to tie or take the lead, the Bulldogs’ defense held firm, forcing a punt. Andrew then engineered a two-minute drill that set up a 45-yard field goal from Ryan Short as time expired, sending Butler into the locker room with a 24-17 lead.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle. Morehead State drew level after a Butler turnover, with Jackson Lanier punching in a 3-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 24-24. The Bulldogs’ offense, however, was stymied by the Eagles’ defense and a series of negative plays, including sacks and penalties. Butler’s only points of the quarter came on another Ryan Short field goal, this time from 44 yards, to retake a slim 27-24 lead heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter became a battle of field position and nerve. After a missed field goal by Morehead State, Butler embarked on a clock-chewing 15-play drive that resulted in Short’s third field goal of the day, a 43-yarder that put the Bulldogs ahead 30-24 with just 3:33 left on the clock.
Needing a touchdown to win, Cravens and the Eagles’ offense took over at their own 25-yard line. The sophomore quarterback was masterful on the decisive drive, methodically moving Morehead State down the field. He completed six passes to four different receivers, consistently finding Upp for key gains to keep the chains moving. Facing a critical fourth down inside the Butler 10-yard line, Cravens lofted a perfect pass to Upp in the corner of the end zone for the game-winning score.
Butler had one final chance with 52 seconds remaining. Backup quarterback Gabe Passini, who had rotated with starter Reagan Andrew throughout the game, managed to move the Bulldogs near midfield. But on a fourth-down pass attempt, the Eagles’ defense held, with Drayson Crane breaking up the final pass to seal the victory.
Cravens finished an efficient 23 of 31 for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Upp was his primary weapon, hauling in nine catches for 154 yards and both scores, including the game-winner.
For Butler, the quarterback duo of Andrew and Passini combined for 135 passing yards but were more effective on the ground. Andrew rushed for 74 yards on 16 carries, while Passini added 31 yards on five attempts. Ethan Loss was the Bulldogs’ most dynamic player, totaling 72 receiving yards and 100 kick return yards to go with his two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing).
The Eagles’ victory keeps their hopes for a winning season alive as they head into their final game at Drake next Saturday. Butler will look to rebound and secure a winning record when they travel to face San Diego.
