Maine Dominates Hampton in Lopsided Road Victory
HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame projections, the Maine Black Bears delivered a commanding performance on the road, overwhelming the Hampton Pirates 35-7 in a non-conference football game Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.
Entering the contest as a 14.5-point underdog according to oddsmakers, Maine controlled the game from the opening kickoff, building a four-touchdown lead in the first half and never looking back. The Black Bears improved to 6-4 on the season, while the Pirates fell to 2-8.
Maine quarterback Carter Peevy was the catalyst for the offensive explosion. The junior from Lawrenceville, Georgia, was efficient through the air and dangerous on the ground, accounting for four touchdowns. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 121 yards and added 45 rushing yards on seven carries.
The Black Bears’ offense struck quickly and often. Their first possession culminated in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Peevy to Ty’ee Stephens, giving Maine a 7-0 lead with 12:34 remaining in the opening quarter. The score was set up by a 46-yard punt return by Scott Woods, who consistently gave the Black Bears favorable field position throughout the afternoon.
Maine’s defense and special teams continued to set the tone, pinning Hampton deep and forcing short possessions. The Black Bears capitalized on another short field late in the first quarter, with running back Rashawn Marshall plunging in from 1 yard out to extend the lead to 14-0.
Hampton, which had been projected by a national statistical simulator to win 37-32, found a brief spark in the second quarter. Pirates quarterback Earl Woods III engineered a 13-play, 71-yard drive, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jah’Kei Chavis. Woods was precise during the drive, completing all three of his pass attempts for 21 yards and adding an 8-yard scramble. The score cut the deficit to 14-7.
Maine responded just before halftime, however, with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard march. Peevy showcased his dual-threat ability on the drive, including a 15-yard scramble, before finding Marshall on a 6-yard scoring pass with 36 seconds left in the half. The touchdown restored Maine’s three-score lead at 21-7.
Any hope of a Hampton comeback was extinguished on Maine’s first possession of the second half. The Black Bears consumed over eight minutes of clock on a 16-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Peevy’s third touchdown pass, a 5-yard connection with tight end Eli Mahan, making the score 28-7.
Peevy added his fourth and final touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, hitting Woods on a 10-yard strike to seal the 35-7 victory.
While Peevy orchestrated the offense, the Maine rushing attack provided balance. Sincere Baines led the ground game with 47 yards on 13 carries, while Marshall was a versatile weapon, scoring twice and accumulating 49 rushing yards and 2 receiving yards. Daniel Batch also contributed 45 rushing yards on just seven attempts.
For Hampton, Woods III was efficient in limited action, completing 9 of 10 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, and rushing for 21 yards. The Pirates’ most explosive play came from running back Donovan Shepard, who broke loose for a 42-yard run in the third quarter. Shepard finished with 61 rushing yards on only three carries. Receiver Tae’Shaun Johnson was a reliable target, catching five passes for 58 yards.
The game’s total points, 42, fell well under the pregame over/under line of 51.5. The outcome also contradicted the ELO rating system, which had given Maine a 74.5 percent probability to win, though the pregame betting line heavily favored Hampton.
Maine, now winners of three straight, will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Rhode Island next Saturday. Hampton will seek to end its four-game losing streak at home against William & Mary.
