North Carolina A&T at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — Quinn Boyd passed for 380 yards and three touchdowns and the Stony Brook Seawolves scored 31 unanswered points to overpower the North Carolina A&T Aggies 38-12 on Saturday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
The Seawolves evened their season record at 5-5, while the Aggies fell to 2-8.
Boyd, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Livermore, California, was surgical in the victory, completing 37 of 48 pass attempts. He connected with Jayce Freeman for two long touchdowns and also added a rushing score. Freeman was his primary deep threat, hauling in seven receptions for 140 yards.
Stony Brook’s offense established control early and never relented. After North Carolina A&T opened the game with a 45-yard field goal from Andrew Brown, the Seawolves responded with two first-quarter touchdowns. Boyd found Freeman on a 33-yard strike and then capped another drive with a 5-yard scramble into the end zone.
The second quarter was more of the same for the Seawolves. Michael Mannino connected on a 34-yard field goal, and Boyd then hit Freeman again, this time for a 65-yard touchdown. Boyd’s third touchdown pass of the half, a 25-yarder to Dez Williams, extended the lead to 31-6. The Aggies managed a 22-yard field goal from Brown as time expired in the half to make it 31-9.
North Carolina A&T found the end zone in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass from Kevin White to Antoine Bell, but the extra point attempt failed. White, the Aggies’ quarterback from Newport News, Virginia, finished 15 of 24 for 180 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Stony Brook put the final points on the board in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Roland Dempster, who finished with 60 yards rushing and 72 yards receiving. The Seawolves’ defense sealed the game with interceptions by Joseph Garcia and Alhaji Kamara.
The Seawolves’ defense held the Aggies’ ground game in check, limiting standout running back Shimique Blizzard to 27 yards on 10 carries.
The result defied the pregame betting lines, which had installed North Carolina A&T as an 18.5-point underdog. The combined score of 50 points fell under the over/under line of 53.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer Stony Brook win, 34-29.
Stony Brook travels to face Villanova next Saturday, while North Carolina A&T returns home to host Monmouth.
