New Hampshire at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Interstat) — The New Hampshire Wildcats delivered a commanding and unexpected road victory on Saturday, defeating the Monmouth Hawks 34 to 13 at Kessler Stadium in a game defined by a dominant second-half performance.

Entering the contest as significant underdogs, the Wildcats improved their season record to 6-4, while dealing a decisive blow to the Hawks, who fell to 8-2. The outcome defied projections from Interstat, which had given Monmouth a 74% probability to win and projected a final score of 42-35 in the Hawks’ favor.

The first quarter belonged to Monmouth, which capitalized on an early New Hampshire fumble. After a 13-play, 81-yard drive stalled at the Wildcats’ 10-yard line, Monmouth quarterback Frankie Weaver connected with tight end Jack Neri on a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks on the board first.

New Hampshire responded decisively in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Wildcats’ first touchdown came on a 13-yard scramble by quarterback Matt Vezza, capping a 70-yard drive. Vezza, a junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, was a dual threat throughout the game, finishing with 173 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding 67 rushing yards and another score on the ground.

The Wildcats added two field goals from kicker Nick Reed before the half, one from 31 yards and a long 53-yarder as time expired in the second quarter. Monmouth managed to answer just before the break, with Weaver finding Josh Derry for a 19-yard touchdown pass. A failed extra point attempt left the score at 13-13 heading into halftime.

Any momentum Monmouth carried into the locker room was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter, as New Hampshire erupted for 14 points. Running back Myles Thomason broke free for a 22-yard touchdown run early in the period. Thomason, a Montclair, New Jersey native, was the workhorse for the Wildcats, grinding out 95 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Later in the quarter, Vezza showcased his arm, hitting Denzell Gibson on a 27-yard scoring strike to extend the lead. Gibson, a running back from Bellwood, Illinois, contributed 38 rushing yards and was a key receiving threat out of the backfield.

The Wildcats sealed the victory with a final touchdown in the fourth quarter, as Vezza found receiver Ryan Blagg for a 12-yard pass. The New Hampshire defense was relentless in the second half, consistently pressuring Weaver and stifling the Monmouth offense.

Weaver finished with solid numbers, completing 20 of 30 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked multiple times as the game progressed. His top target was TJ Speight, who hauled in six catches for 89 yards, while Rodney Nelson shouldered the rushing load for the Hawks with 88 yards on 19 attempts.

The Wildcats’ defense and special teams also made key contributions. DaMontre Patterson provided a spark in the return game, averaging 32.5 yards on two kickoff returns, while the defense forced a critical turnover on downs in the first half that shifted the game’s momentum.

The loss is a significant setback for Monmouth’s season, while New Hampshire builds on its recent success, having now won three of its last four games. New Hampshire travels to face Bryant next Saturday, while Monmouth will look to rebound on the road at North Carolina A&T.
