Dartmouth Holds Off Princeton’s Late Rally for Home Victory
HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — In a gritty Ivy League contest defined by defensive stands and a frantic fourth-quarter rally, the Dartmouth Big Green held off the Princeton Tigers 20-17 on Saturday at Memorial Field.
Dartmouth quarterback Grayson Saunier, a sophomore from Lafayette, La., was ruthlessly efficient, completing 12 of 15 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground. His performance, coupled with a dominant rushing attack led by D.J. Crowther, propelled the Big Green to their sixth win of the season.
Princeton quarterback Kai Colón of Middletown, N.Y., engineered a late comeback attempt, finishing with 266 passing yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 30 yards and a late score. But his efforts were hampered by two critical interceptions and a Dartmouth defense that stiffened in key moments.
The game unfolded as a defensive struggle early. Dartmouth struck first, capitalizing on a Colón interception by Patrick Campbell. The Big Green marched 35 yards in six plays, with Saunier finishing the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Princeton’s offense sputtered on its next possession, with Colón throwing his second interception of the opening quarter, this time to safety Harrison Keith of Fairfield, Conn., in the end zone.
Dartmouth then embarked on a marathon 17-play, 76-yard drive that bled into the second quarter. Crowther, who finished with 96 yards on 20 carries, capped the methodical series with a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Big Green a 14-0 lead.
The Tigers finally got on the board just before halftime. A 12-play drive, featuring a heavy dose of running back Christian Lynch, stalled inside the red zone, forcing Princeton to settle for a 36-yard field goal from Esteban Nunez Perez, making the score 14-3 at the break.
Dartmouth extended its lead in the third quarter. Saunier connected with tight end Chris Corbo of North Caldwell, N.J., on a 25-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Big Green with a 20-3 advantage.
Princeton’s offense, which had been stifled for three quarters, finally found its rhythm in the fourth. Colón led a 15-play, 80-yard drive, with Lynch punching it in from 2 yards out. A failed two-point pass kept the score at 20-9.
After forcing a Dartmouth punt, the Tigers mounted a desperate, game-tying drive. Colón was masterful, completing 8 of 13 passes for 75 yards on the series. He scrambled for a 5-yard touchdown with 33 seconds remaining and then successfully ran in the two-point conversion to pull Princeton within three points.
The ensuing onside kick, however, was recovered by Dartmouth’s Corbo, and the Big Green ran out the clock to secure the victory.
The win improves Dartmouth’s record to 6-2 overall, while Princeton falls to 3-5. The Big Green’s defense was anchored by a strong punting performance from Luke Armistead of Brentwood, Tenn., who averaged 43.3 yards on four kicks, repeatedly flipping field position.
For Princeton, Ethan Clark was a workhorse, rushing for 69 yards and adding 52 receiving yards. Josh Robinson led all receivers with 8 catches for 70 yards.
Dartmouth will host Cornell next Saturday, while Princeton returns home to face Yale.
